Joseph S. Stiles
The Guthrie Daily Leader
Thursday, June 29, 1899
Submitted by: Bob Chada

Death of a Good Man.
Captain Joseph S. Stiles, residing five miles east of Guthrie, died at 6:15 on the evening of the 27th, from the result of a stroke of paralysis which occurred about two months ago. At one time it was believed that he would recover the use of his limbs and his speech, but his physician informed the Leader that it was extremely doubtful whether he would ever be entirely well again.
Captain Stiles was an honest man and a noble citizen.
He was county treasurer of Logan county for two full terms and discharged the duties of the office with a fidelity and scrupulous honesty that won for him the praise and respect of the entire people, and at no time during his whole official life as treasurer of Logan county was there ever the slightest reflection breathed against his integrity as an officer or a citizen.
The whole county bay well lament the death of such a man and drop a tear of regret over his grave. He leaves a widow and two sons and a daughter, and hosts of friends everywhere over the county to mourn his death.
His funeral was held at two o'clock this afternoon and was attended by a very large concourse of people to Summit View cemetery, where the remains were laid to rest, Rev. W. G. Miles, of the Presbyterian church officiating as the minister in charge of the last sad rites.
The funeral anthem was sung by Mrs. Gora Grissell, Miss Zoe Kimball, Mr. J. E. Ball and Carl Havighorst. The pall bearers were George E. Billingsley, Mayor Berkey, O. P. Cooper, A. A. Humphrey, Paul Newman and Fred Dolcater.
