Funeral services for Melvin Eugene "Smitty" Smith, age 83, of Guthrie, OK will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 2, 2006 at First Southern Baptist Church, Guthrie with Pastor David Nolen of the First Southern Baptist Church, Weatherord, TX. Burial will follow at Summit View Cemetery, Guthrie. Services are under the direciton of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.
Smitty was born on March 6, 1922 in Crescent, OK to John Melvin and Nellie Marie (Pieratt) Smith. He died February 26, 2006 in Guthrie.
Melvin married Pauline (May) on December 16, 1945 in Guthrie. Smitty attended Crescent schools and later joined the U. S. Army serving in World War II as a tank mechanic in Central Europe for one year and in the United States for two years receiving the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 2 stars and 1 overseas bar and WW II Victory Medal. He has been a member fo the First Southern Baptist Church for 49 years. He worked for various auto dealers before putting in his own automobile repair shop, "Smitty's Auto Service", he and his wife owned and operated it from 1960 until 1978. He loved helping the Boy Scouts for several years when he was younger, he was a sixty-three year member of the American Leion # 58, and he and his wife were charter members of the First Capitol Sams Club, being members from 1987 until 2004.
He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Pauline Smith of the hone, one daughter Paula E. Hood and husband Dr. Tommy Hood of Weatherford, TX, and several nieces and nephews that will all miss him dearly.
Melvin is preceded in death by his parents and one son, Brett Eugene Smith.
Pallbearers will be Phillip May, David May, Richard May, Michael May, Gregg May, Bill Pickle, and Tim Taylor. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the First Southern Baptist Church Youth or Building Fund or the charity of your choice.
Visitation for friends and family will be Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
