Marley Addison Smith

Died: August 11, 2008

Marley Addison Smith, born August 15, 1916 in Guthrie, Oklahoma, died August 11, 2008 at the age of 91 in Guthrie, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vada Elsie (Rainey) Smith and his parents, Marley Franklin Smith and Alta Marie (Boyington) Smith.

Marley graduated from Guthrie High School in 1933; attended Central State College for two years and graduated from Oklahoma A and M College with a BA Degree in Accounting.

Marley worked in the Logan County Treasurer’s Office until he enlisted in the United States Army the day following the Pearl Harbor attack and served in the Army Quartermaster Unit attached to the 8th Air Force from December, 1941 until August, 1945.

Marley married Vada Elsie Rainey on August 25, 1945 in Fort Worth, Texas. He worked for his Father for one year after his Army service, then opened a Public Accounting Office in 1949 and was in practice until the business was sold in 1982.

Marley is survived by son, Marley Addison Smith, Jr. and wife Judy; daughter, Shirley Marlene (Smith) Crume and husband Gene; and daughter Beverly Sue (Smith) Sykes and husband Earl; eight grandchildren: David Marley Wienand and wife Stacey; Zac Smith; Jessie Amanda (Smith) Shipley and husband Tyler; Michael Farris Chitwood and wife Terri; Kelley Marie Crume; Amy Michelle (Sykes) Ingle and husband Shawn; Jillian Dawn Sykes; and Kyle David Sykes; four great-grandchildren: Daniel David Weinand; Jessica Margaret Weinand; Kathleen Kelly Weinand; and Brent Daniel Ingle.

Marley was a Past President of the Oklahoma Associate of Public Accountants; Past President of the Guthrie Rotary Club, where he was an active member for over 50 years; Past President of the Guthrie Chamber of Commerce; Past Master, Lodge of Perfection Scottish Rite; Member of Guthrie School Board; Treasurer of the City of Guthrie for many years; Logan County Youth and Family Service Treasurer; Logan County Ambulance Board Treasurer; member of Guthrie Lodge #162; member of Scottish Rite Bodies, KCCH; member Indian Shrine; member of York Rite Bodies; member of National Society of Public Accountants; member of Eastern Star; member of Gideons; and member of the Red Cross.

Marley was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Guthrie for his entire life, serving in many areas such as Lay Leader; Treasurer; Choir; Board Member; many committees; and was a Sunday School Teacher, including the High School Class from 1945 to 1949 and started the Winsome Sunday School Class in 1949 which is still an active class today, having personally taught the class for over 50 years.

Marley enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and attending OSU athletic events.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 14, 2008 at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Doug Burr officiating. Burial will follow at Summit View Cemetery, Guthrie. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Renovation Fund, 224 East Noble, Guthrie, OK 73044. Visitation will be held Wednesday until 8:00 p.m. at Smith-Gallo Funeral Home. The casket will not be open after the service. Condolences may be emailed to smith-gallo@sbcglobal.net.
