Florine Fern Smith

Florine Fern Smith, 89, passed away Friday afternoon, September 9, 2016, at Edmond Health and Rehabilitation Nursing Center in Edmond, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Oscar and Annie Rhea, born November 24, 1926 in Wewoka, Oklahoma. Florine grew up with her brother, Oral in the Wewoka area and moved to California during WWII contributing to the war effort working alongside her mother in a bomb / grenade factory. She married Navy war veteran, Olen Smith of Okemah, Oklahoma, following the war in Richmond, California on July 7, 1945. Florine and Olen returned to Oklahoma and attended Oklahoma A & M, where they both graduated with Bachelor of Science degrees in 1949. After brief teaching stints in Wilburton and Mutual, Oklahoma, they settled in Guthrie, Oklahoma in 1951.
Florine continued her teaching profession at Guthrie High School for many decades before retiring. The positive role model and influence she exuded as a teacher on her students was so instrumental in ensuring they went on to have very successful careers. She taught Typing, Shorthand, Cooperative Office Education and was a Future Business Leaders of America advisor to what was recognized as one of the premier Chapters in the state. Florine continued her pursuit of excellence by obtaining her Master’s degree in Education from Oklahoma State University. She did this while teaching during the day and driving to class in Stillwater at night. She was active with Guthrie High School Booster Club, established Programs for athletic events, active in community events, active member of First Southern Baptist Church, loved sports, loved OSU and travel. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family.
Florine is preceded in death by her late husband, Olen Smith.
She is survived by her 2 sons and their wives, Kevin and Susan Smith of Guthrie; Shawn and Jody Smith of Fort Worth, Texas; grandchildren Carrie Stewart (Smith), Aaron Smith, Danae Riddel (Smith), Shane Smith; and 8 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Friday, September 16, 2016 at Smith Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.
Visitation will be held Thursday, 4:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M.
