Darlene McCamey

Born: October 23, 1939
Died: August 24, 2012

Edna Darlene (Deadwiley) McCamey was born on October 23, 1939 to William Rufus and Clara Edna Deadwiley in their home in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Darlene passed away in her home suddenly on Friday, August 24, 2012. While her story started during The Great Depression, it was rich with vibrant celebrations of life. Darlene’s story is one of strength, courage and perseverance.

There was no greater joy in Darlene’s life than her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. With each generation came more love and more joy. Darlene leaves behind her cherished mother, C. Edna Deadwiley and younger sister, Rhonda Edmondson. Darlene also leaves behind her beloved children; Diana Plagg, Mark McCamey and Sherri McCamey Hall. She also leaves behind her treasured grandchildren: Courtney Fincher, Shae Colton, W. Derek Hall, Chelsea Phillips, Kayla Evans and Mark D. McCamey.

Darlene, or as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren called her, “Ganny” was very involved in her family’s lives. Whether it was just stopping by to see the great-grandbabies and spoil them with the latest toy or outfit or visiting her mother in the nursing home, Darlene was the most self-less, compassionate and loyal to her family and friends. Darlene loved to brag on her children and grandchildren. She especially loved to brag about her great-grandchildren and she leaves behind so many that treasured her deeply. Her great grandchildren include: Katie and Abby Fincher; McCamey and Kodie Colton; Braden and Bryson Hall; Tyler, Jayce and Keagan Phillips and Scout and Tatum Evans. She was proud of her family and enjoyed to tell anyone she knew about them. Darlene kept pictures of her grandkids and great-grandchildren with her everywhere she went including her desk at work, and of course her walls at home were also filled with the joys of her life. Her love of family shined anywhere she went.

Darlene’s family and friends know of her passion of all things Elvis and John Wayne and also watching The University of Oklahoma (OU)’s football games every fall. Watching her jump up and down when her team made a play put a smile on anyone’s face. Even her cell phone ring tone was the OU fight song and she would dance around as it played. She had many simple joys but nothing made her happier than being around her family. Darlene worked for Mercy Health Network for over 20 years.

Each one of the above-mentioned family members has so many cherished memories of Darlene and although most of her great-grandchildren are young, their parents will keep Darlene’s legacy of unconditional love going strong. One thing we can all learn from Darlene is to put family first. No matter what the situation, Darlene was certain to be there through thick and thin, loyal until the end. No matter the hurdle, Darlene never waivered. She loved and was loved by so many. She had character, strength and the determination to carry everyone through their situation. It is that very character that will live on in her family and friends, a legacy of unconditional love.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at First Christian Church with Chaplain Gene Owen of Companion Hospice officiating. Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery, Guthrie. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home.

Visitation will be Monday 1:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

You can only have one “Ganny” Patient kind and true; No other person in the entire world, Will be the same to you. When others let you down, To Ganny you will return, For all her loving kindness, She asks nothing in return. As we look upon her picture, Sweet memories we recall, Of a face so full of sunshine, And a smile for one and all. You are not forgotten loved one Nor will you ever be As long as life and memory last We will remember thee. We miss you now, our hearts achy and sore, As time goes by we miss you more, Your loving smile, your gentle face No one can fill your vacant place. Sweet Jesus, take this message, To our dear mother & grandmother up above; Tell her how we miss her, And give her all our love.
