Helen Justa Jones

Born: April 05, 1919
Died: December 21, 2015

Helen Justa (Rose) Jones was born April 5, 1919 on the family farm north of Guthrie, Oklahoma. She was the seventh of eight children born to Naaman Justus and Sarah Elizabeth (Mason) Rose. Helen passed away on Monday, December 21 at the age of 96 at Mercy Hospital in Logan County, Guthrie after a brief illness.

Helen married Clifford Lee Jones May 23, 1941 in the Noble Avenue Baptist Church, Guthrie, Oklahoma. Lee and Helen farmed in the Guthrie area until 1955. In August of 1955 they moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa where Lee was a carpet layer, where he also taught his sons the trade. When Lee retired in 1978, they moved back to Guthrie.

The last thirteen years Helen resided at Ash Street Place in Guthrie. She was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church. Helen’s life spanned from the time when farming and travel with horses was common to the Internet era. She saw the dust bowl begin and end, traveled to California in a Model A when roads through mountains were risky. She remembered the days when airplanes were so uncommon that you ran outside to see them when they passed over head, she and her siblings were the generation that fought World War II, and has sons and sons-in-law who are Vietnam era veterans. She was very active in Democratic politics in Iowa and her open acceptance of all kinds of people led her to being elected as Precinct Captain. She loved traveling with Lee, the love of her life, and her kids, even willing to camp to do it. Many of the family’s favorite stories are a result of their many camping/traveling adventures. Helen loved to quilt, not only creating quilt-tops, but also hand-quilted the quilts. Her children and grandchildren treasure the quilts that she made for each of them. She was an avid reader, recited poetry and Bible verses that she learned as a child and had numerous favorites. She passed her love of reading on to her children and grandchildren. Those who know her will miss her charm and wit, her ability to amuse, and being entertained by her knowledge of sometimes-useful folk remedies. Her love of useless but interesting facts has been passed to her children and will therefore live on.

Helen is survived by five children Peggy (Lyle) Biekert of Bozeman, Montana, Joseph (Debbie) Jones of Fairfax, Virginia, Clifford (Karen) Jones of Ozark, Missouri, Helen Gayle (Bill Ray) Lundeen of Davenport, Iowa, and Lawrence Jones of Davenport, Iowa; one sister, Eunice (Rose) Griffin of Guthrie.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her uncle Clinton Rose; her husband, Clifford Lee Jones; one son, Robert Henry Jones, two brothers Warren and Henry Rose, four sisters, Ethelyn Dilday, Alice Thomason, Alma Rose and Sarah Fullerton.

Visitation will be at Smith-Gallo Funeral Home on Sunday, December 27 from 3:00 to 8:00 pm in Guthrie Oklahoma.

Services will be held Monday, December 28th at 10:00 am at Smith-Memorial Chapel in Guthrie with Chaplain Gene Owen officiating. Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.
