John Joseph Holler Jr.
Born: October 20, 1934
Died: May 07, 2016

John J. Holler Jr. of Guthrie went to be with the Lord on May 7th, 2016. He is preceded in death by his first wife Virginia Dare (Smith).

John was born to the union of John J. Holler Sr. and Mildred Mae Holler on October 20, 1934 in Pittsburgh Kansas. After high school John moved to Detroit, where he worked for a time in manufacturing and trucking. Eventually he attended Western Kentucky University and earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and continued on to Vanderbilt University in Nashville where he worked as a clinical biochemist at Vanderbilt Hospital while he also taught chemistry to freshman medical students and pursued a master’s degree in his field.

In 1967 John was awarded a masters’ degree in chemistry from Vanderbilt for his thesis regarding chemical warfare. Later that year, John took a position in the then nascent field of computer information technology with the Upjohn Pharmaceutical Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Eventually tiring of the bureaucracy and constraints of big business, John struck out on his own as an owner-operator in the long-haul trucking business, a trade that he plied until nearly the end of his working days.

As a result of his scientific research, in 1966 John was elected a member of the Vanderbilt Chapter of the Society of Sigma Xi, a fraternity of scientific researchers and in 1982 was elected to the New York Academy of Sciences. In 1980, John was elected to the Data Processing Management Association.

John was an accomplished and enthusiastic piano player who enjoyed gospel and country music, and was the church piano player in most of the houses of worship of which he was a member over the years.

A Mason for many years, John was especially proud of the great Masonic Hall in his adopted hometown.

John is survived by his wife, Georgia (Isgar) Holler, sister Jane Embry, three sons from his first marriage, John J. Holler III, Grant Randolph Holler (Lorna), Robert Wayne Holler (Brenda), step-sons and daughters, Justin Leach (Tammy), Jason Leach (Valerie) , Brenda Leach Johnson (Mike), Rhonda Flock (Don) and 5 grandchildren and 11 step-grandchildren and 10 step-great-grandchildren, and John is the expectant great-grandfather of Fitzgerald Roy Bloemker (due to be born August 28, 2016) .

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at Smith Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Gene Owen and Pastor Martin Giphart officiating. Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, 11:00 AM - 8:00 PM
