John Morgan Gathers

John Morgan Gathers

January 17, 1927 - May 01, 2017

John Morgan Gathers was born January 17, 1927 in Meridian, OK, to John W. and Opal M. Gathers and he died on Monday, May 1, 2017 at the home of his granddaughter, Beth Mayer, in Guthrie. He was surrounded by family as he went very peacefully.

John married Lois Ann ("Nan", as she was known to him) Thompson, of Arcadia, in 1946 in Guthrie. They were the parents of John Vern Gathers and Lynn Gathers, 5 grandchildren: Mike, Julie, Joni, Keri, and Beth, and 8 great-grandchildren: John Dylan and Jakoby Gathers, Victoria and Lydia Wells, Blake Fingerhut, Grant, Mason, and Jaxson Mayer.

John, being the ambitious, hard-working man that he was, worked in the oil fields, beginning in the drilling derricks and later in the production area. In 1962, he made a big decision to return full-time to the farm. And farm he did! Cattle and all!

John was always interested in what was going on around him, especially in the field of agriculture. He served as chairman or board member of many local and state organizations including Logan County ASCS, OK Cattlemen's Association, and Oklahoma Pork Commission, just to name a few. He was always active in 4-H Club and FFA, promoting his 2 boys and later, all 5 grandchildren. He also served at Logan County Commissioner, as did his grandfather in the 1930's.

John is survived by his son Lynn and his wife, Rose Ann, all 5 grandchildren, their spouses, all 8 great-grandchildren, his sisters: Norma Poeling of Edmond and Nettie Jean Habben and her husband, Clyde of Luther, OK, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Lois, son, John Vern, his parents, and 2 brothers: Clarence and Harold "Bud" Gathers.

We will all miss him dearly as he was one to always be the boss and direct us in, usually, the right direction. John was a very Christian man thru his faith, daily prayers, and always asking for forgiveness and guidance and love for his family.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at Smith Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, 3:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 2915 North Classen Blvd., OKC, OK 73106
