Ernest R. Davis

Born: October 22, 1924
Died: April 16, 2010

Ernest R. Davis of Guthrie, Oklahoma went to his eternal rest on Sunday, April 25, 2010. Ernest was born October 7, 1933, near Guthrie, to M.A. ("Audney") Davis and Mary Etta (Johnson) Davis.

He grew up as part of a loving extended family which included his parents, his older brother, Harold, and a very closely-knit group of aunts, uncles and first cousins with whom he spent countless hours and remained close throughout his lifetime.

Ernest graduated from Guthrie High School in 1951, and entered a farming partnership with his father immediately thereafter. He then enlisted for a two-year stint in the U.S. Army, most of which was served in Paris, France. He was honorably discharged in 1955, and returned to the family farm west of Guthrie.

Ernest met the love of his life, Shirley, in April 1956, and they were married August 10, 1957 in the home of Shirley's parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Schnuelle. Ernest and Shirley had three sons, into whom they poured a lifetime of love, direction, discipline and devotion.

Ernest came to a saving faith in Jesus Christ at a young age, and served God faithfully as a member of Harmony Community Church near Guthrie throughout his entire adult life. At various times over the years, he taught Sunday School and served in numerous church leadership positions.

He was also a dedicated civic, community and agricultural industry leader, serving in Board and Officer positions with the Guthrie Board of Education, the Logan County Hospital Board, the Crescent Cooperative Association, the Indian Meridian Technology Center, the American Chianina Association, the Sirloin Club of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma FFA Alumni Association, the Governor's Board of Agriculture under two Oklahoma governors, and many others.

Ernest had a lifelong passion for Oklahoma agriculture, and especially agricultural youth programs. He dedicated innumerable hours, as well as financial support, to various FFA, 4-H and other youth programs in the State of Oklahoma and on a national level touching many young lives as a result. He and Shirley also personally gave of themselves to help shape the lives of a number of individual youngsters over the years through their love, hospitality, discipline and emotional and financial support.

Ernest was predeceased by his parents, M.A. Davis and Mary Etta Davis (Brant), his brother, Harold Davis, his stepfather, Clarence Brant, and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins. He is survived by Shirley, his beloved wife of 52-plus years, his sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Gail, Rick and Pam, and Kenny and Gina (all of Guthrie), and by ten grandchildren, Callen, Beau, Cooper, Luke, Caleb, Jill, Emily, Amanda, Sarah and Ben Davis. Ernest’s grandchildren absolutely lit up his life.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 29, at Smith-Gallo Funeral Home in Guthrie.

Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 30, 2010 at the First Christian Church, 402 E. Noble, Guthrie, Oklahoma, followed by burial at Summit View Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Gideons International (Logan County Camp), to Harmony Community Church, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
