Edith Melcenia Craig

Born: September 14, 1911
Died: March 30, 2008

Edith was born on the home place farm near Blanchard, Oklahoma, September 14, 1911, to John L. and Jessie Mae Holmes Moore. She departed this life March 30, 2008, in Guthrie, Oklahoma, at the age of 96.

Edith attended Buffalo School near Blanchard. In 1927 she married Lonnie Leroy Gage in Rush Springs, Oklahoma, later moving to Shawnee, Oklahoma, where their son Clyde Edward Gage was born.

On December 24, 1941, she married James Russell Craig, her husband of 40 years, in Texarkana, Arkansas. During World War II Edith worked as a “Rosie the Rivetter” at Douglas Aircraft Plant in Midwest City, Oklahoma, while Russell served in the Navy. She later followed him to many locations while he worked as an accomplished heavy equipment operator. Later they moved to Guthrie in the late 1950’s to establish Aerial Spraying of Guthrie, a business partnership with son Clyde Gage.

Edith was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter # 12 of Guthrie, Oklahoma, for many years. Edith was an immaculate housekeeper. She loved yard work, gardening, fishing for catfish and frogging for large frog legs. She especially enjoyed camping with her son Clyde and daughter-in-law Joyce and spending time with her family, friends and neighbors. Her laughter and beautiful smile will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Preceding her in death were her husbands Lonnie Leroy Gage and James Russell Craig; daughter-in-law, Myrna Loy Green Gage; sisters Macle Penn, Opal Boen, and Veda Sutton; brothers Odis, Burnice and Elton Moore.

Edith is survived by her son, Clyde Edward Gage and his wife Joyce; three grandchildren, Ronney Edward Gage and his wife Marilyn of Guthrie; Kimberly Ann Gage Crick and her husband Nolan, of Guthrie; Joyce Ellen Welch and her husband David of Beaver, Oklahoma. Also she had 9 great grandchildren; Marcy Ronne Gage, Craig Allen Gage, Rabecka Sue Ross, James Edward Gage, Seth King, Jill Farris, Michael Ray Crick, Tyler Edward Welch and Nicole Anne Welch; 10 great-great grandchildren; and one great-great-great grandchild. Survivors also include 3 sisters; Iris Morgan, Midland, Texas; Verda Surerus, San Diego, Texas; Letha Dell Bailey, Tomball, Texas; one brother, Norvel Joe Moore and his wife Ruth of Blanchard, Oklahoma.

Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at Smith Memorial Chapel in Guthrie, with Dr. Dennis Clark of the First Christian Church officiating. Burial will follow at Summit View Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie, Oklahoma.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Companion Hospice 1314 East Oklahoma in Guthrie, Oklahoma, or First Christian Church 402 East Noble in Guthrie, Oklahoma.
