Connie Beth Covington

Born: December 05, 1947
Died: April 28, 2012

Connie Beth Payne Covington, 64, went to be with the Lord on April 28, 2012. She was born in Perry, Oklahoma on December 5, 1947, to Floyd Thomas and Ruth Augusta Payne. She married Darrell Covington on January 31, 1969.

Connie was a 1966 graduate of Guthrie High School, a 1967 graduate of Central State School of Cosmetology. In 1969 she began working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company where she was employed until her retirement in 2002. She was co-owner of Advantage Inspection Service; a member of Cherokee Telephone Pioneers and served as president twice, vice president, secretary and treasurer; a member and past president of Jaycee Jaynes; helped start a chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, serving as president, secretary, and on the ways and means committee. Most recently, she served on the board and was co-president of Hope in Oklahoma, a gynecology support and education group out of the OU Oncology Center. She helped organize the Celebrate Hope Walk in September 2010.

Connie was preceded in death by her parents, in 2004, her brother, Thomas Allan Payne in 1964, and brother-in-law Donald Simons in 1994. She is survived by her husband, Darrell Leslie of the home; two sons, Craig Allan Covington and wife Alexis of Hennessey, Oklahoma, and Nathan Leslie Covington and wife LeeAnna of Guthrie; sisters, Margaret Simons of Los Alamitos, California, Susann Shanahan and husband Mike of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; three grandchildren, Sawyer Allan Covington of Moore, Oklahoma, Sydney Vi and Isabel Rose Covington of Hennessey, Oklahoma; and many other loving nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and several really close and wonderful friends.

Connie enjoyed all types of music, gardening, hiking, spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren--they called her "MoeMoe" and she loved it. She loved being with her girlfriends for lunch, shopping or just visiting. Their motto when shopping was “Need has nothing to do with it.”

Her one main passion after she was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer was to make sure Oklahoma had an ovarian cancer license tag for all to see. Connie was adamant that ovarian cancer needs to be “out there” in order to get women educated and talking about it to their doctors.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at the First Christian Church, 402 E. Noble, Guthrie with Dr. Dennis Clark officiating. Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, 9:00 am - 8:00 pm. The casket will not be opened at any time.
