Born: August 17, 1936
Died: August 14, 2011

Beverly Deane Bowman was born August 17, 1936 in Tulsa, OK and passed away August 14, 2011 at Mercy Hospital, Oklahoma City, OK. She was a mother, grandmother, sister, and good friend as well as a caring nurse for countless hospital patients. Her family and friends will always remember her quick and sometimes wicked sense of humor, and her patients will remember her serious devotion to their welfare.

Beverly is survived by her sons Mark and his wife Ann, Jack Jr., and David; grandchildren Adrienne, Trevor, and Dustin; sister Jeanne Hines McDaniel of North Carolina; and nephews and niece Sydney, Bubba, and Bennie. A daughter, Barbara “Baba”, died in 1970 at age 9.

Beverly was the older of the two daughters born to Harold and Barbara Manley of Tulsa. She graduated from Holland Hall in Tulsa and attended the University of Oklahoma. In 1957, she married Jack M. Bowman in Tulsa. They lived in Wichita, KS until he joined the U.S. Army. She moved with him to an Army base in Germany, where their first child, Mark, was born.

The young family returned to the U.S. in 1960 and lived in Denver, CO. Here they welcomed their daughter, Barbara. Sons Jack Jr. and David were born after the family moved to Guthrie, OK in 1961. Beverly enjoyed life in this friendly and historic town. Weekend activities often included camping and boating on Oklahoma lakes with children and friends.

Beverly’s lifelong passion was medicine. For most of her professional career, she worked as a registered nurse at South Community Hospital, now Southwest Medical Center.

She shared a love of music and the arts with her children and grandchildren. At an early age, her grandchildren started going to Civic Center Music Hall performances with grandma. Her favorite holiday was Christmas. It was a family tradition to gather in her home on Christmas Eve. Friends, colleagues, and her sons’ extended families often joined the festivities. All fondly remember her as a generous and funny Santa and as the cook of great Christmas dinners featuring prime rib roast.

Her patients were the priority in her professional life, and she devoted her skills and energy to their welfare. Her focus on nursing continued after retirement. Working as a hospice volunteer, she assisted in the care of patients dying at home. In recent years, she lived quietly in her Edmond, OK home, which she shared with Rush, her loyal basset hound. She loved animals and four-legged companions were part of her life.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Smith Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery, Guthrie. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.

Visitation will be Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Beverly’s honor may be made to the charity of your choice.
