Dennis A. Uhrig

Born: March 19, 1939
Died: July 09, 2011

On the south end of Mulhall, OK there is a sign that states "Mulhall, OK, Pop. 304 and one old grouch"; well that old grouch got on his John Deere lawn mower and rode off into the sunset.

Dennis was born on March 19, 1939 in Watonga, OK to Albert and Lydia (Fearn) Uhrig. They moved to Mulhall when he was 7 years old. He graduated from Mulhall High School in 1957 with his best friend, Donald Vick. He joined the National Guard with Donald right after graduation. Dennis went to AMF Bowling Mechanic School and went to work at the Twilight Bowl in Yukon, OK. In 1960, he married Barbara Hawk and moved to Yukon where he met Dale Robertson and worked on Dale’s horse ranch, The Haymaker Farms, on weekends. Dale helped Dennis get his job with Robert Taylor and they moved to Los Angeles, CA to work as Robert’s ranch manager. He moved back to Mulhall in 1968 and went to work for Hugh Johnson John Deere.

He is preceded in death by his son Denny, his parents, brothers Kenny and Delbert, sister Connie, and son-in-law Steve Platt. He is survived by his wife Barbara, daughter Kim, grandchildren Lydia and Taylor, great-grandchildren Ara, DJ, and Ilyauna, sisters Kay of Mulhall and Naomi and her husband John of Modesto, CA, brother Jerry and his wife Doris of Topeka, KS, and brother-in-law Jack Hawk of Arkansas City, KS.

I hear Scott and Mike were scared of their Uncle Dennis, but they loved and respected him. Several nieces and nephews came to live in Dennis’ home: Elaine, Jenny, Steve, Pokey, and Charlie. He was an uncle and father to all of them. Also, Alanna Uhrig lived in his home and went to OSU.

Uncle Dennis wanted everyone to believe he was rough and tough, but really he had a soft heart and a heart of gold. He would do anything for you, just ask and see.

Dennis will ride forever on Jody Brainard’s saddle; win the Futurity race for Jody.

Dennis was Grand Marshall of the Mulhall Day Parade, 2011.

He was a retired Mulhall Fireman and was the Fire Chief for years.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mulhall-Orlando Athletic Fund, P.O. Box 8, Orlando, OK 73073 or Image Hospice, 2311 West 7th Place, Stillwater, OK 74074.

Thanks to Image Hospice for their gentle touch and love they gave Dennis.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at Roselawn Cemetery, Mulhall with Pastor Adrian Pollard officiating. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie, OK. At the family’s request, they casket will not be open at any time.
