Dorothy Ruth Johnston
Born: May 07, 1925
Died: June 27, 2012

Dorothy Ruth (Penrod) Johnston, 87, of Guthrie, Okla. went home to be with the Lord on June 27, 2012. She was born on May 7, 1925 in Guthrie to Benjamin and Dora (Bock) Penrod.

Dorothy was born on the Bock family farm just north of Guthrie and spent her entire life in the community. She was a graduate of GHS Class of 1943, and continued to regularly attend reunions and events throughout the years. On Jan. 14, 1945, she married Joe Johnston. Together, they celebrated 67 years of marriage. Dorothy was a homemaker and mother, raising four children, Norman, Tommy, Timmy and Sandra, who were the joy of her life. Because of her love of gardening and cooking, she was well known for winning many awards at the county fairs and was a member of Guthrie Homemakers Extension Club. She also held jobs as a cook at the Central Christian Camp and Masonic Temple, a Central State University bookstore clerk and worked at Kress during Christmas.

While she was active in many areas, her true love was spending time with her church family at First Christian Church. She was baptized at age nine. She was a faithful member of the Share Group, the Macklin Guild, the Loyal Partner’s and Gleaner’s Sunday School Class. She helped with numerous activities and dinners throughout her life in the church. One of her most treasured moments was a trip to the Holy Land and being baptized in the Jordan River.

Besides being a proud wife and mother, Dorothy was also a proud grandmother and great grandmother. She never missed an opportunity to give them a hug or talk to them on the phone.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Joe; children Norman Johnston and wife, Sally of Norman, Okla., Tommy Johnston and wife, Sharon of Edmond, Okla., Timmy Johnston and wife, Bonnie of Crescent, Okla., and Sandy Gillett and husband, John of Charlotte, N.C.; her brother, Hubert Penrod and wife, Erma of Guthrie, as well as 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and many other extended family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Dora Penrod, two infant siblings, two granddaughters, Lindsey Johnston and Michelle Johnston.

Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m., Monday July 2 at First Christian Church in Guthrie with Dr. Dennis Clark officiating. Burial will follow at Lawrie Cemetery, north of Guthrie. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at Smith-Gallo Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 1.

The family requests memorials be made to the First Christian Church “General Fund” at 402 E. Noble, Guthrie, Okla. 73044.
