Wayne Lloyd Bennett
Born: July 18, 1928
Died: January 27, 2016

Wayne L. Bennett passed from this earth at the age of 87 on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 surrounded by his family.

A lifelong resident of Guthrie,Wayne was born on July 18, 1928 to Orval and Alice Plagg Bennett. He graduated from Guthrie High School in 1946 and married Maxine Leavitt on March 1, 1952 at her parent’s home near Crescent.

Wayne proudly served in the US Army from 1950 to 1952 as a heavy equipment operator in Colorado and Newfoundland, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. He belonged to the American Legion and always expressed his profound appreciation for all that served in the Armed Forces.

Upon leaving the Army, he continued as a heavy equipment operator, working for Harold Schultz at Sooner Dozer and Otha Douglas, before eventually operating his own construction company. For more than 60 years, Wayne was happiest operating his bulldozer. Later in life, he enjoyed pointing out all the ponds, building pads, and drilling sites he had built during his career, often reminiscing about the individuals involved and details of each job.

He and Maxine also sustained the family farm in the Abell community. On the farm settled by his grandparents over 100 years ago, they raised crops and cattle. In 1963, they added a sheep herd for their girls’ 4-H projects.

In the 1980s, he built a beautiful lake on family property and delighted in hosting family and friends for hunting and fishing and large picnics near the water’s edge. For many years, he and Maxine hosted the annual church picnic at the site, providing and cooking the fried fish and barbequed meat himself.

Wayne was a member of the First Christian Church of Guthrie. He served as a Deacon and was on the Building Committee for the construction of the new sanctuary.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Patty, his parents, and his stepfather James Wilson.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Maxine of the home, daughter Cathy James and Larry of Guthrie and daughter Shirley Waner and Elden of Guthrie. He was particularly proud of his grandchildren, Justin Mays and Lindsay of Guthrie, Grant James and Caedee of Luther, Kyle James and Whitney of Guthrie, Susan Savory and Rick of Guthrie and Carla Brown and Ken of Yukon.

He is also survived by 15 great grand-children, Paxton, Deacon and Daisy James, Jonah and Susannah James, Taylor, McKenzie and Andi Mays, Alexandria, Joshua and Taryn Ward, Avery and Cole Cunningham and Katelyn and Mason Brown.

The family expresses their gratitude to the staff of Golden Age Nursing Home and Companion Hospice for their loving care of Wayne.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, February 1, 2016 at First Christian Church with Reverend Amy Rogers officiating. Interment will follow at Lawrie Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.

Visitation will be held Sunday, 2:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. The casket will not be opened after the service.
