Joan Booth Dodd Jones

Joan Booth Dodd Jones was born July 12, 1925 in Pawnee, Okla. to Quincy H. and Hallie L. (Good) Booth. She passed away March 23, 2016 at her home in Crescent, Okla. at the age of 90 years.

Joan was raised in a home where both faith and family were cherished. They moved to Crescent in 1928 and lived in the home that still sets on Washington Street. Joan was surrounded by music in that home and was recognized early for her beautiful voice. Her family provided special music and programs at many community events in Crescent and Joan was a part of so many of those.

She graduated from Crescent High School in 1943 with honors and Joan was the recipient of both the Danforth Award and the Balfour Key, now known as the Crescent Award. During her final years of high school, she rode the train to Enid to take private music lessons at Phillips University, where she would later graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Music.

Joan taught school for three years in Marshall and 27 years in Crescent. She was perhaps best known, and received accolades for the incredible musical productions which she created for the Crescent schools, and in her later years, for the Crescent community. She carefully selected the music, articulately wrote and created the scripts, dreamed of the set designs that would be necessary, and made it all happen with absolute perfection. She had a very unique ability to develop vocal talent and those who were fortunate to have her as a music instructor will never forget the lessons about music and life that she taught them.

Her music enriched the lives of her students, and the community. She demanded excellence and was committed to inspiring her students and choral groups to rise to higher levels of excellence. Joan directed productions of the Crescent Community Christmas Carol to raise funds for an injured firefighter and the Crescent Emergency Fund, and recruited a cast of 200 volunteers for "The Follies" which benefited the Education Foundation for Crescent teachers and students.

In 1954 Joan married Wayne Dodd. He preceded her in death. They lived in Crescent and built the beautiful home she remained in until her passing. In 1978 she married Billy Jones. He preceded her in death in December 2013.

Joan was a woman of great faith. She was active in her church throughout her life, directing choirs and vocal ensembles and soloists, attending Bible Studies and most of all, by loving and caring for the people. She knew the importance of building and nurturing relationships and she did that until she took her last breath.

Joan was gracious and kind and loving and brought beauty and “music” to everything and to everyone whose life she touched. She always exhibited hospitality whether she was entertaining a large or small gathering in her home and loved every aspect of doing so. She was an active member of the Alpha Study Club, Retired Teacher’s Association, the Frontier Country Historic Museum, and the Crescent Education Foundation. Joan brought out the songs in our hearts, and brought Crescent together as a community.

Survivors include her sister, Patsy Pollard of Hennessey; nieces, Melinda Hobbs of Kingfisher, Shelly Sheffield of Gore, Sheila Duell of Hennessey, Saundra Badgett of Shawnee, Kan., and Sue Tipton of McKinney, Texas; nephews, Barry Pollard, MD of Enid, Brad Pollard of Crescent, Bryan Pollard of Hennessey, Robert Bruce of Arlington, Texas and Richard Bruce of Waban, Mass.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tues., March 29, 2016 at the First Christian Church in Guthrie with Pastor Amy Rogers officiating. Burial will be in the Crescent Cemetery under direction of Abernathy Aaron Funeral Home in Crescent. Memorials may be made to the Crescent Public School Foundation, P.O. Box 719, Crescent, OK 73028.
