The History of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Cemetery
Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Cemetery dates back to January 8, 1902 when it was deeded by Dan J. Norton to the Right Rev. Meerschaert. It was a square area along the north edge of the NE quarter of Section 7-14-4.
The oldest tombstone inscription is that of Desire Fouquet, nee Launey, who was born at Bonnetable, France on December 18, 1821 and died February 11, 1902. Tombstone inscriptions were recorded by Indian Spring Chapter, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution on February 15, 1972 at which time there were 58 tombstones. Since that time, vandals have broken and destroyed some of the tombstones.
An additional two acres adjoining the cemetery were granted by William H. Norton to the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City on December 12, 1977 to be used for additional burial space when it was needed.
The cemetery is maintained by Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Chandler.
