George E. Sprayberry, Jr. spent the last day of his life helping at
risk students of the PACE School in Duncanville.
Mr. Sprayberry, 68, died November 12, 1998 of a heart attack at
Charleton Methodist Hospital in Dallas. Services were in Dallas and Prague, Oklahoma where he was buried.
The longtime Duncanville Independent School District band director
and counselor came out of retirement in 1993 to help start the new school, designed to keep seventh-12th grades from dropping out.
"He's saved many a did." PACE principal Ruth Richey said.
Mr. Sprayberry did what it took, whether it was buying glasses, prom
tickets or lunch for students, she said. He was ever known to take students to and from school.
"He had an open pocket, he paid for whatever they needed." Dr.
Richey said.
Born in Perry, Oklahoma, Mr. Sprayberry, received a bachelor's degree
in music from OSU in Stillwater in 1953 and a master's degree in counseling in 1960.
From 1953 to 1964, Mr. Sprayberry taught in public schools in
Cleveland, Oklahoma. He joined the Duncanville district in 1965 as band director.
In 1974 he became a counselor at Ree Junior High School.
He retired in 1989 to care for his aging parents but returned to the school district in 1993 to help start PACE School.
Mr. Sprayberry is survived by a sister, Stella Andersen of Dallas.
