IRENE EVA LEGAKO
1914 - 1999


Irene Eva Legako died Wednesday in Edmond. She was 85.
She was born March 25, 1914, in Wellston to Edward and Helen Peterson Legako.
She grew up in Wellston. After graduating from high school, she graduated from the University of Oklahoma School of Nursing in 1941.
She signed up to serve a year in the U.S. Army, but her duty was extended. She was a surgical scrub nurse and was sent to Northern Africa in 1943. She was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious World War II service. She retired after 29 years of service as a major. She then returned to Wellston and helped look after the family farm and cattle.
Survivors include her brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Mary Ann Legako and Steve and Ruth Legako, all of Edmond; Col. Ted and Barbara Legako, Stillwater; and Victor and Anne Legako, Fletcher; sisters, Wanda Legako, Wellston; Dorothy Sherrer, El Dorado, Kansas; and Vivian Winter, Junction City, Oregon; sister-in-law, Hellen Legako, Wellston; nineteen nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, one sister and two brothers-in-law.
Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. today at the Wellston Cemetery with the Rev. Dwayne Settle officiating under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Chandler.
Memorials may be made to Glafko-Legako, American Legion Post No. 61, Wellston.
