JEAN SMITH

16 Jan 1918 - 11 Mar 2007

Graveside service for Jean Smith, 89, of Yukon, Oklahoma, former Chickasha resident, will be held at 12:00 p.m., Saturday, March 17, 2007 at the Gotebo Cemetery, Gotebo, Oklahoma. Jean Smith was born January 16, 1918 at Cooperton, Oklahoma to Burl Smith and Eva Ola Smith and died March 11, 2007 in Oklahoma City.

At three years old her family moved to Sedan, Oklahoma where she started school and graduated in 1935. On September 19, 1936 she married Jesse Franklin Smith, and they made their home at Saddle Mountain until they moved to Gotebo, Oklahoma where they bought the Blue Goose Station and grocery store.

On December 19, 1939 her daughter, Shirley Yvonne was born and on February 25, 1944 her son, Jesse Franklin Smith, Jr. was born. Jean ran the grocery store until 1948.

They bought and operated the Mountain View Produce until 1950 when they moved to Chickasha, Oklahoma.

They bought a residence that included The Midget Grocery which she ran until 1954. During that time she took a business course in office machines. She then worked for The Chickasha Cotton Oil Mill as a bookkeeper until 1958 when she went to work for J.C. Penney Co. as a bookkeeper for eight years. Jesse and Jean then bought a Grocery Store and Meat Market in Verden, Oklahoma which they operated for the next ten years when they retired in Chickasha. Jean was an active member in the Senior Citizen Group doing volunteer work and a member of The Chickasha Round Up Club for thirteen years.

In 1994 they moved from Chickasha to Blanchard, Oklahoma where Jesse passed away on March 4, 1997. Shortly after Jean lost her eye sight and had a stroke. She was living at the Ranchwood Nursing Home in Yukon when she passed away.

Survivors include: one daughter: Shirley Hunyadi and husband Eugene of Oklahoma City; one son: Jesse Smith and wife Marvel of Blanchard; three grandchildren: Warren T. DeKinder and wife Angie of Prosper, Texas; Jesse F. Smith IV of Blanchard; Brandon Ray Smith of Blanchard; two great-grandchildren: Cole T. DeKinder of Prosper, Texas; Alexandra DeKinder of Prosper, Texas.

Interment will be in the Gotebo Cemetery under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home.
