Death Claims C. F. Wehling, Aged Pioneer Resident

Charles F. Wehling, a resident of this section for the last 40 years, died Tuesday evening, February 19, at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. J. O. Rudd, 3 1/2 miles southeast of town.

His health had been failing for many months, but he was confined to his bed but a short time preceding his death.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon from Union Chapel, northeast of Hennessey, under auspices of the I00F Lodge. Rev. H. M. James, pastor of the Hennessey Methodist Episcopal Church, officiated at the services, with Rev. Donaghue assisting.

The attendance exceeded the capacity of the church and only a portion of the crowd were able to gain entrance.

Interment was made in the Lyon Valley Cemetery. Members of the I00F were in charge of the services at the grave.

Charles Frederick Wehling was born in Lehammburch Lippe, Germany, February 7, 1841. He came to the United States at the age of 16, locating in the state of Illinois. Five years later, in 1862, he enlisted in the 9th Illinois Volunteer Infantry for service with the Union forces in the war between the states, serving until honorably discharged at the close of that memorable conflict in 1865.

He was married to Anna E. Benner on September 12, 1865 at Harsparie, Illinois, by Frederick Erdman, pastor of the Lutheran Church, the denomination with which he had affiliated following baptism at the age of 14 years. They resided in Illinois until 1884, then moved to Nebraska. They came to Oklahoma in 1889, locating northeast of Hennessey. 12 years later, in 1901, they moved to Hennessey, which remained their home until 1926. The past three years were spent with children and granddaughter, Mrs. J. O. Rudd southeast of town.

He is survived by his wife and four children, Carl Wehling, of Bison; August Wheling, of Hennessey; Mrs. Anna Coleman of Enid, and Mrs. Lena Moran, of Hennessey, and 37 grandchildren and 17 great – grandchildren.

Four of his children preceded him in death.

He was a patient sufferer and welcomed death with his promise of life beyond.
