Verlena was born on October 20, 1920, in a sod dugout in Jordan, Mont., where her parents were homesteading property.
Her parents, Joel Tanner Weaver and Orpha Leona Weaver, moved back to Kingfisher where Verlena attended Gant School and Kingfisher High School until the middle of her senior year. Verlena moved to Arkansas where her parents were living then, and she graduated from Alma (Ark.) High School in 1938. Verlena met Raymond Selby shortly after arriving in Arkansas. While Raymond was serving in the Army, Verlena worked as a nanny/ childcare worker both in Arkansas and Oklahoma. She married Raymond on July 20, 1941, in Kingfisher and returned to Kingfisher when Raymond left to serve in the Army overseas during WW II. Together they opened a business in Kingfisher in 1945: Selby Radio then Selby Radio and TV. They operated that business together for 50 years. Verlena and Raymond enjoyed traveling in their van, equipped with Ray’s amateur ham radio gear, to locations where their children lived. Most importantly, they were always partners in love and life. This site may be freely linked, but not duplicated in any way without consent.
