A Celebration of Life service for Vernon D. Breckenridge, age 88, of Hennessey, will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020, at the Ladusau-Evans Chapel, with Pastor Norris Williams officiating.

Burial will follow in the Kingfisher Cemetery under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends Monday from 5-6 p.m. at the funeral home. The family request that everyone wear a mask and social distancing will be required.
 

Vernon was born March 22, 1932, in Okeene, OK, to Fred and Evelyn (Osborne) Breckenridge and went to be with the Lord on December 23, 2020, at his home.
He attended Dunbar School and graduated from Langston University at the top of the class. He was a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. He taught and coached at Geary High School and Dunbar High School. He worked as a supervisor at Tinker Air Base. In 1964, he came back to the Hennessey community and started farming and ranching. He served on the Board of Regents for Oklahoma State University and all the land grant colleges. He served on several national, state and local boards. He farmed most of his life in the Hennessey community.

Vernon married Ruth N. Garrison on March 29, 1952, in El Reno, OK. He was an active deacon at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Hennessey and later at Grayson Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as the Sunday school superintendent.
 
He survived by his wife, Ruth, of the home; three sons, Monte Breckenridge and wife Lydia, Ennis Breckenridge and wife Jane, Thomas Breckenridge and Dorothy Jones; daughter, Ruchele Morris and husband David; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ray Dean Breckenridge and wife Lena, Billy Lee Breckenridge and wife Mary, and Bernard Charles Breckenridge and wife Lorretta; brother-in-law Dale Garrison and wife Marie; and several other family members.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents; son Vernon D. Breckenridge Jr.; three sisters, Vera Kenner, Alveta Nichols, and Deloris Moore; and brother Fred Breckenridge Jr. 
 
Memorials may be made to Grayson Missionary Baptist Church, with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodians of the funds.
