Irene Violet States, 94, of Hennessey, Okla., died Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center, Enid, Okla.


At her request, a graveside service only will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, in Hennessey Cemetery under the direction of Cordry-Gritz Funeral Home, Hennessey, with Rev. Duane Roever officiating.

Family visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Irene was born east of Hennessey Feb. 28, 1915, to Charley and Alma Curry Berkenbile. She was the oldest of seven children. She attended Lone Star School and Hennessey High School. Irene and Ula Stephen States were united in marriage Oct. 23, 1933, at the home of Rev. Wallace Linton in Hennessey, Okla. They resided on the States homestead that was claimed in the Run of 1889 their entire married life.

She was a homemaker and belonged to Neighborhood Farm Women's Group. She was a member of Union Chapel Church.

Her husband, infant twin boys, her parents, three brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Ireta and husband Lisle Yarns of Hennessey, Okla., and Sharon and husband Merwyn Pray of Enid, Okla.; three granddaughters, Mrs. Grady (Kimberly Dawn) Jordan of Easley, S.C., Mrs. Jeff (Lou Ann) McNaughton of Dallas, Texas, and Mrs. Sean (Daphne Ann) Stewart of New Fairfield, Conn.; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Alene Self of Edmond, Okla.; and one brother, Charles Berkenbile of Dallas, Texas.
