Earl Cary Hazel was born Dec. 22, 1947, in Thomas to Glen Dale and Myrtle Spangler Hazel. He passed away at his home on Jan. 31, 2025, at the age of 77.
 

If you knew Earl, you likely heard him say, “Come on 7’s” and “SPIN Red!”

Earl spent his childhood in California before being baptized as a young man in the mountains of Lake Tahoe. After the death of his father, the family returned to Oklahoma.

It was here that Earl met and later married Linda Clark on June 19, 1965.

He graduated with the class of 1966 from Fay where they made their home. To this union were born three children: Lynetta “Dawn” Hazel, Kathryn Dayle Hazel and Micah Shane Hazel.

He spent his life at various occupational endeavors, all of which he was quite talented, but his passion was carpentry. His skill and craftsmanship left a lasting mark on many homes in Thomas, Weatherford, Hennessey and surrounding areas where he was able to show his love of cabinetry.

His children and grandchildren, along with other family members and friends, all grew up working alongside him and learning his skills.

And yes, he always made sure everyone knew the “right” way to roll and trim a wall with paint or stain wood - and, no, you do not paint over stained wood.

He became his granddaughters’ first call or an occasional FaceTime when they wanted to kick down some walls or whatever project they were working on and he was so proud when they did it.

Earl was a fountain of knowledge, always the one his family and friends turned to for guidance on a project or to fix something around the house.

In 1981, Earl married Anita Faye Doughty and they made their home in Thomas. Following her passing, Earl was reunited with his first love, Linda Carol, and they were married on Oct. 27, 2001.

Together, they made home in Hennessey, where Earl lived until his passing.


Earl is survived by his wife, Linda, of the home; his children, Dawn Shaw and Mike of Dover, Kathryn Meeker and Chad of Hennessey, and Micah Hazel Tysen of Piedmont; 14 grandchildren, Nick Shaw, Julie Matthews, Nathan Shaw, Kari and Brandon Friesen, Kendon Lott, Paige and Taylor Paul, Rylee Jackson, Austin and Allayna Spiva, Hunter and Adilene Turner, Addi and Easton Fenton, Bradyn Turner and Davin Turner, Garrett and Kiara Hazel, Kadee Meeker and Chesney Hazel; and 20 great-grandchildren, including Drake, Kolten, Tytace, Kylar, Jancee, Baylor, Adlee, Daxx, Bentley, Brecken, Case, Kooper, Rodee, Journi, Asher, Karlee Jo, Iris, Brielle, Kreed and Mable.

He is also survived by his brothers Murral and Loreta Hazel of Skiatook and Wayne and Judy Hazel of Anthony, Kan.; his brother- in-law Tommy Foust of Thomas; sisters-in-law whom he loved as his own, Joyce Pryor of Hennessey, Phyllis Hinkley of Edmond, Freda Edsall and Nelda Clark of Watonga.


Earl was preceded in death by his parents, wife Anita Hazel and sister Mae Foust.


Funeral services for Earl were Feb. 5, at First Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Shane Bennett. Burial followed at Hennessey Cemetery under the direction of Cordry-Gritz Funeral Home.


Memorial donations may be made in his name to Hennessey Firefighters Association with the funeral home serving as custodian of the fund.
