Luke A. Hannon was the first born son of Bartholomew and Nancy O'Hannon. They settled in Ohio and the"O" of O'Hannon was dropped to sound more American. Both of his parents were killed when the family cabin was raided by Indians in the 1850s. He and his two brothers hid in the loft of the cabin and were not discovered. The three Hannon brothers were split up among local families. At the age of fifteen he enlisted as a drummer boy in Co, I, 12th Illinois Cavalry at Springfield Illinois. He fought on the front lines for awhile and eventually became an orderly for the infamous George Armstrong Custer.
After the Civil War Luke A. Hannon went west, he served as a sheriff, was an expert horseman and told his children tales of delivering mail for the Pony Express and traveling by wagon trains across the west. He eventually settled as a farmhand with the Guest family of Kechi, Kansas, Luke married the daughter of the family: Dollie Guest who was at least 25 years his junior. Hannon and his young wife moved to Hennessey, Oklahoma in 1901. Luke Hannon was a Veterinarian for farms all around the Hennessey area and Kingfisher County. Luke and Dollie had eight children: Mabel, John, Alice, Tom and Almyra lived to adulthood. Arthur and Nancy died of whooping cough and diptheria. Ednona died as a baby. Luke A. Hannon died on July 23, 1927 of liver disease.
