January 28, 1925 - September 21, 2020

Ethel Marie Springer, 95, passed into eternal life on September 21, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. If you knew her before the illness, you know how devastating this disease really is. She was no doubt met at Heaven’s Gates by her husband of 71 years, Leonard, who has been waiting for her to join him since February of this year.

Ethel was born January 28, 1925 to Harold and Verna Pray in Ponca City, Oklahoma, where she and her younger brother were raised. After graduation from Ponca City High School, she worked for WBBZ Radio Station, as a dispatcher at the police station, and phone operator at “Ma Bell!” She met and married Leonard Springer in 1949 and they raised their two children, Harold and Sharon, and one foster son, Rocky Holt.

Ethel loved reading, riding horses, reading, watching her soap operas, reading, playing her harmonica, reading, bickering with her husband, and reading, not necessarily in that order.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Robert Pray, and husband, Leonard Springer.

She leaves behind her loving family; son Harold Springer (Karen) of Oklahoma City; daughter Sharon Springer of Guthrie; granddaughters Andrea Hanson (Josh) of Centennial, Colorado; Leah Long (Kyle) of Guthrie; great-granddaughter, Dani Johnson of Centennial, Colorado; and her amazing family of caregivers and friends at Willow Creek Nursing Home in Guthrie, Oklahoma, to whom we will be forever grateful.

Ethel was loved by many and will be greatly missed, especially by her beloved dog, Jewel.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please take the time to visit, call, or write a note to a loved one or friend in a care facility, and thank the caregivers for all they do.

Visitation will be held from 1-6 p.m., Sunday, September 27, 2020 at Matthews Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 28, 2020 at Waterloo Road Church of Christ. Interment will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Resthaven Memorial Park in Ponca City, OK.

April 11, 1923 - February 19, 2020

Leonard Calvin Springer, age 96, received a call in Edmond, Oklahoma, on February 19, 2020, to attend a reunion with family and friends he has not seen in a long time, and he will not be returning.

Leonard was born April 11, 1923, to Samuel (Shorty) Springer and Nora (Truex) Springer. He was born and raised in the Kaw city area. His childhood with 15 siblings is a book yet to be written.

He married Ethel Pray on September 2, 1949, and they started their lives together in Ponca City, OK. They had 2 children, Harold and Sharon, and 1 foster son Rocky Holt.

Leonard wore many hats throughout his life; farmer, carpenter for oil companies, park recreational director at R&D, running a sod farm, and his favorite job of all, being a grandpa. His jobs took him from Oklahoma to Colorado and South Carolina. He retired in 1984, living in Edmond and Guthrie until his passing.

He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings. He leaves behind his loving family; wife of 71 years, Ethel; son Harold Springer (Karen) of Oklahoma City; daughter Sharon Springer of Guthrie; granddaughters Andrea Hanson (Josh) of Centennial, Colorado and Leah Long (Kyle) of Guthrie; great granddaughter Dani Johnson of Centennial, Colorado; and all of his brothers and sisters at Waterloo Church of Christ.

Leonard will be remembered for his kindness, his love to tell stories, and his amazing capacity to love.

In lieu of flowers, the family would hope that you will do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for someone in need, in his name.

Public visitation will be held Sunday, February 23, 2020 from 2-8 p.m. at Matthews Funeral Home with family greeting friends from 2-4 p.m. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 24, 2020 at Waterloo Road Church of Christ in Edmond, OK with interment at 2:00 p.m. at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery in Ponca City, OK.
