James R. “Jim” Bates, retired Ponca City Fire Chief and resident, died Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at Stillwater Medical Center. He was 73.

A service will be held at 10am on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008 at St. Luke’s Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. David Frees, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park, under the direction of Trout Funeral Home and Crematory.

James Robert Bates, the son of Lee and Jessie (Sunday) Bates, was born on Nov. 19, 1934 in Bartlesville, Okla. He grew up in Bartlesville, where he graduated from High School. On May 1, 1954 Jim married Delores Hoskins in Wainright, Okla. They moved to Ponca City in 1958. He worked for several years Jack Bowker Ford in the finance department before joining the Ponca City Fire Department in 1964. He served as Fire Chief from 1984 to 1989, which he greatly enjoyed.

Jim loved cars and spending time with his family. He was a faithful servant at St. Lukes Church of the Nazarene where he served as a greeter and as the church board secretary. He will be greatly missed in the lives of many.

Family members include his wife of 53 years, Delores, of the home; grandchildren, Jarrett Bates, Jackson Bates and Corrie Bates all of Fayetteville, Arkansas; brothers, Vance Bates of Tulsa, William Bates of Bethany and Harold Bates of Bartlesville, and several nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his son, James Vance Bates, his parents, two brothers, Brady and Arnold Bates and three sisters, Doris Bates Clopp, Delores Bates Drake and Rosanne Bates Neuman.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Lukes Church of the Nazarene

Casket bearers will be Ronnie Shelton, Gordon Stangeland, Gary Lynes, Cary Roth, Everett Brown, Gene Rahn and Tommy Richardson.

Honorary casket bearers will be Richard Terrill, Dale Anderson, R.J. Duckwall, John Redwine and Wes Nipper.
