Freddie was born on July 6, 1949 in Pawnee, Oklahoma to the late Marvin and Christine Blueback Raise the Other. He was a member of the Ponca Tribe and his Ponca Indian Name was Nizhapawah and his Ponca Clan was Wohzhazhe. He attended school at McKinley Elementary, then Ponca City West Jr. High and graduated from Ponca City High School in 1967.

He was raised in Bodock which was his ranch home. He worked for many surrounding tribes, Ponca Tribal Housing, Kaw Nation, and Tonkawa Tribe of Oklahoma and then moved on to work for Williams Pipeline and was a keen mechanic. If someone had a problem with their vehicle he would take care of them and later passed it down to his two sons. Big Dog enjoyed working on cars, listening to Linda Ronstadt, Al Green, Roy Orbison, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, and going to the casino. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing Shinny with his nephews and grandsons. You could always catch him in style in his bandana and sunglasses and saying "Like a Big Dog", "All Night Long", "Everything will be copacetic", "Life Goes On" and would always ask his grandkids if they wanted to be a Jelly Bean or a Rubberband Man. He also had a love for eagles and red birds, and loved rubies which was his birth stone.
