March 20, 1930 - December 25, 2007

Twila Thompson, former resident at 429 South Elm, Ponca City, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2007, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. She was 77. The memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 29, 2007 at the Trout Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Bigger, pastor of the Free Will Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home.

Twila Thompson was born Twila White in 1930 and grew up during the depression years and WWII in Oklahoma. Tough, modest times, she and our dad, Richard, literally built with their own hands the house us kids grew up in. In nearly as difficult times, they successfully raised a family of five children in Ponca City, Oklahoma, always keeping them fed, clothed and very much loved. In her last days, as was the case all of our lives, mom’s children were foremost in her thoughts. She was the ultimate mother and grandmother, even though we were never affluent, we never really noticed. We were rich in ways that truly matter.

Our mother even “adopted” many of the friends we grew up with. It was very common to hear our friends call her mom. Even though our mom lived a modest lifestyle, she was as generous a person as I have ever known, somehow finding a way to help her kids and others whenever we were in need or felt we were. She loved to cook and her family and neighbors always shared in her wonderful creations of down home meals and her canned goods. Her heart was forever and unwaveringly dedicated to her children, family, friends and the Lord. It seems nearly impossible to capture in words, but perhaps the word compassion works best in an attempt to define this wonderful person. In addition to cooking and canning, mom loved her flowers, her gardening, and her songbirds. Perhaps these are the most evident things I learned and have in common with my mother and I will always cherish them. My garden will forever be dedicated to her and the memories we share.

Our mother was unexpectedly stricken with cancer a couple of months ago. Even through these troubles, her thoughts were more of her children and grandchildren than with her own difficulties. She fought her personal battles and was able to visit with her children, family and friends through these tough last months. This seemed to be her greatest comfort and when it was time to join the Lord, she was ready. Mom passed away peacefully at home with her baby sister Pauline by her side. Somehow, it seems a little easier for me that the Lord would invite her to his kingdom on the day of the birth of his only child Jesus. I like to think that this honor would be reserved for only very special people; mom was certainly one of those. We will always remember this day in honor of both.

Mom can now finish her journey and join our father in eternal life and no one, not one of us, will ever forget that we were privileged to have been raised by this most loving and caring person. One unequaled on earth. We wonder how we can honor her, but I’m sure that our fond memories and love in remembrance are what she would like the most, and to strive to imitate her never-ending love, compassion and heart as we live and raise our own families. A heart too large to physically fit in a human form. She will live forever in the hearts and minds of those who knew and loved her.

She is survived by one sister and by her five children; Sister, Pauline Lindley and her husband, John of Skiatook; Daughter, Diana Martin and her husband, Glenn of Tulsa; Son, Gary Thompson and his wife, Donna of Ramona, California; Daughter, Patty Edens and her husband, Chuck of Ponca City; Son, Keith Thompson of Norman; Daughter, Juanita Thompson of Ponca City. She is survived by nine grandchildren; Geanna Martin, Angela Greer, Tim Stone, Sarah Stone, Thomas Thompson, Allison Thompson, Shasta Akers, Jesse Edens and Mary Edens. She is also survived by nine great grandchildren; Tyler Greer, Payton Greer, Mia Greer, Sebastian Stone, Ethan Meaut, Madison Edens, Jessie Edens Jr., Cameron Akers and Kacie Akers.
