George C. Martin
December 17, 1932 - January 29, 2012

George C. Martin, resident of Ponca City, passed away Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012, at his residence with his family beside him. He was 79.

The service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Smith, pastor with Chaplin Mike Sweetman officiating. Burial will then follow at Oddfellows Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory.

George was born on Dec. 17, 1932, to the late Amos Martin and the late Mattie Marie Baldwin Martin, in Konawa, Okla.

George lived a wonderful and adventurous life. The Amos Martin family was blessed with five brothers and five sisters. They resided in Davis, Okla., and then moved to Ponca City. George entered the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne in 1950, at the age of 18, where he defended our country proudly in Japan and Korea receiving many honors; Army Occupation Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, Combat Infantry Badge and a UN Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1952 and then joined the U.S. National Guard.

After returning to Ponca City, George joined the Ponca City Fire Department in 1953 where he served as a fire fighter, paramedic and recovery diver. George attended the University of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma State University studying fire technology. He retired in 1973 and then started his own business, Martin Construction, until he retired in 1996 and left his son, Bud, to continue the legacy.

On June 20, 1954, George married the love of his life, Sandra J. Bothwell in Ponca City where they resided and raised their family.

George, also known as Lee Roy, Poppo and Big Daddy, enjoyed his family immensely. They went on many camping adventures where they fished, boated and skied. George taught many young Ponca kids how to water ski on these outings. Lake Ponca and Rochford, S.D. were places his family called home, carrying on traditions from generations past.

George enjoyed Sooner football. He, Sandy, family and friends met in Norman for just about every OU home football game where they tailgated. They also loved to travel the United States in their motor coach.

George was a member of the First United Methodist Church, VFW, American Legion, Elks and Moose Lodge in Ponca City.

George is survived by his wife, Sandra, of the home; one daughter, Arneva Martin of Frisco, Texas; one son, James "Bud" Martin and his wife, Margie, of Ponca City; three grandchildren, Wesley Martin Pittman of Frisco, Texas, Marissa Leigh Pittman of Norman, Okla., and Katie A. Martin of Ponca City; one brother, Jerry Martin of Calumet, Okla.; and one sister, Imogene Jolly of Brownsville, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and four sisters.

Casket bearers will be Paul Ley, Scott Pittman, Barclay Pittman, Frank Kennedy, John Thorpe and Nick Morris.

Honorary casket bearers will be Jim Pittman, Jake Helms, Bing Shelton, Donnie Helms, Scott Pryce, Larry Lyles, Rick Jones, Kenneth Hall and David Cummings.
