Feb 20, 1847 - May 6, 1918

Sidney W. Acton, who died very suddenly last Monday morning was born in Richland County Ohio February 20, 1847. His wife to whom he was married on June 17th, 1866 was Miss Kate Addell McGettigan. She died just a few years ago here in Ponca City ever since then Mr. Acton has felt very lonely.

There were three children in the Acton home. Two sons and one daughter. The sons names are, Theophilus M. and Norman. The daughter's name was Nellie and she has been dead several years.

The Acton family came to Oklahoma about the time of the opening of the Cherokee Strip and located in this community. They have been numbered among the best of citizens that have contributed to the best interests of the community.

Mr. Acton was a soldier in the Civil War, belonging to Co. F 4th cavalry, Mo. He enlisted on the 13th of April 1862 and was discharged April 12, 1865. He was a member of the Post here in Ponca City and was known as one of its most active members. He had in his charge the preparation of the memorial service and the Decoration Day program but his sudden summons called him from this post of earthly duty.

His funeral which was held in the Christian Church of which he was a member on Wednesday afternoon was attended by a very large crowd of friends and neighbors which was an evidence of the high esteem in which he was held by people.

The burial was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
