He grew up in Arkansas City Kansas along with his older brother Bob. His hard work ethic began with a paper route that he ran daily. The fruits of his paper route funded his love of roller skating as a child. Fishing and bowling were other pursuits Ray enjoyed when he was younger. They made their home in Newkirk Oklahoma. Soon, Ray was employed by John Morrel Packing Plant and then came along their daughter Tammy in 1970 and son Tony in 1971. When the packing plant closed, Ray went on to work for Eddie Harris then the Kay County Courthouse, and later with the city of Newkirk water Dept. He retired from his final full-time job as a maintenance worker with the Newkirk Public Schools. After retirement, Ray loved working part-time at the Greenfield Greenhouse in Newkirk. Ray adored his family above all else and worked hard to care for them, as well as enjoying the precious time spent with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Gardening was another of Ray’s hobbies. He loved sharing his produce with friends and family.
