March 2, 1920 - March 15, 2016

Mary E. Hardy, age 96, was born on March 2, 1920 in South Haven, Kansas to W. B. and Octavia Johnstone and died March 15, 2016 in Enid. Mary was the eighth of fifteen children and had 10 brothers and four sisters.

Mary spent her childhood on the family farm and assisted in managing the household. The family moved to Oklahoma in 1933. As a young woman Mary was introduced to a neighbor, Paul Warren Hardy. Her brother Bob served as chaperon on their first date. Paul and Mary were married on January 4, 1940 in Ponca City. They lived in Oklahoma City early in the marriage, and Mary worked at Will Rogers Field during the "Rosie the Riveter" days. They had three children: Hazel, Paul Jr., and Tom. The family moved to Midwest City in 1946; other moves due to Paul's military career included South Carolina, West Germany and Louisiana. When they returned to Midwest City, Mary worked at a local sanatorium, for a number of years.

Mary was known for her abundant energy; this led to her having many hobbies: bowling, organic gardening, traveling with Paul in their travel trailer, crocheting and swimming laps regularly, Mary also enjoyed volunteering and delivered Meals on Wheels at an age when most were recipients instead of deliverers. She was an avid fisherman to the end, winning a fishing tournament at her retirement community in the last years of her life. Mary loved to bake and could be counted on for a sweet treat when friends or family stopped by to visit. She was devoted to her family and especially enjoyed trips to Houston where her younger son Tom lived and had a houseboat. She also looked forward to the Johnstone Family Reunion held each year in June. Six years ago, Mary moved to a retirement community in Enid, to be near her daughter.

Surviving are her daughter, Hazel Wright of Enid, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Paul, sons Paul and Tom, grandson Brandon, son-in-law Don, her parents, and eight brothers and three sisters.

There will be a viewing from 12pm-8pm, Friday, March 18 at Ford Funeral Service in Midwest City and 11am-12pm, Saturday March 19 at Miller-Stahl Funeral Home in Newkirk. A graveside service for Mary will be held at 1 PM, Saturday, March 19 at the Newkirk Cemetery. Dr. Mike Tignor of First Baptist Church of Midwest City, where Mary was a member, will officiate. Ford Funeral Services of Midwest City will serve as custodian. The family will meet at Parish Hall at St. Johns Lutheran Church after the service.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Circle of Love in Enid or an organization of choice, in lieu of flowers.
