Wauneta Theola Enninga, longtime Newkirk resident, died May 8, 2005 in Cushing Regional Hospital. She was 93.

The daughter of Burl and Bessie (Latimer) Rhoton, Wauneta was born Jan. 13, 1912 in Comanche County near Lawton.

When she was two years of age, the family moved to Ralston and later to the Three Sands area. When she was almost six, the family moved to a farm northwest of Newkirk, and she received her education at Grant Rural School.

After she finished her education she was employed as a housekeeper for Mr. and Mrs. Carl Shinn.

On Oct. 30, 1935, Wauneta and Jelto Dierk "Jake" Enninga were married at Newkirk.

They established their home on a farm west of Newkirk near the Peckham community. In 1969, they retired from farming and moved into Newkirk where she has since resided.

Her work history includes employment as nutritionist for the Peckham school; nutritionist for St. Francis Catholic School; nutritionist for Newkirk Nursing Center for two summers; and she was assistant director of the Newkirk Housing Authority.

Wauneta was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She had also served as a Sunday School teacher for a number of years.

She was a member of the Grant Card Club and the Golden Agers Card Club, pinochle and pitch being her favorite games.

She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

She was an avid reader and especially treasured western books.

She is survived by one son, Roger Enninga of Newkirk; a son~in~law, Bobby Robinson of Newkirk; seven grandchildren, Cathy and Rod Tavanello of Newkirk, Carol Hines of Cordell, Chris and Terry Shook, Jay and Angie Enninga, Alan and Naomi Enninga, and Jauneta Patton, all of Ponca City, and Jamie and Donnie Widener of Newkirk, and 19 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jake; one daughter, Wanda Robinson; her parents; two brothers, Burlen Rhoton and Bill Rhoton; two sisters, Laverne Riggs and Merle Mailen; and two great grandchildren, Chelsea Fugate and Colten Widener.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 12 in St. John's Lutheran Church of Newkirk with the Rev. Jim Dehne officiating. Burial will follow in Newkirk Cemetery. Miller~Stahl Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. The casket will be open at the funeral home until noon Thursday and will not be opened at the church.

Those family members serving as casket bearers will be Jay Enninga, Alan Enninga, Bob Robinson, Terry Shook, Donnie Widener and Rod Tavanello.

The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Enninga's memory to Lutheran World Missions through Eastman National Bank, P.O. Box 468, Newkirk 74647~0468.
