May 17, 1949 - December 15, 2018

Charles P. Mitchell, age 69, resident of Ponca City, passed away Saturday, December 15, 2018 at his home.

A graveside memorial ceremony with U.S. Army honors will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, December 21, 2018 at Longwood Cemetery with Reverend Tom Howard officiating. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home & Crematory.

Charles was born on May 17, 1949 to Richard Mitchell and Betty Sue Burgess Mitchell in Loma Linda, CA. He was raised in the Barstow, California area, graduating from high school there in 1967. Shortly after high school, Charles joined the U.S. Army, serving two tours in Vietnam, as well as being awarded the Bronze Star. Charles's time in the military left a lasting impact upon his life. Upon his discharge from the military, Charles took to being a handyman, skillfully helping others with their projects. During a painting project, Charles made friends with another painter from Blackwell. After visiting his friend, Charles fell in love with the Kay County area, moving to Ponca City in 1998. Once in Ponca City, Charles set about making friends and joined the local VFW. His daily pursuits around town included visiting his friends at various downtown businesses and sampling the fare of the local restaurants, all the while being guarded about who he would let into his life. When the conditions were right, Charles found peace in dropping a line at his favorite fishing spots around the area.

Survivors include his children: Charles C. Mitchell and wife Ashley of Solon, IA, Laurissa Mitchell of Burlington, IA,Timothy Mitchell of Ft. Madison, IA, Elizabeth Calhoun of West Point, IA, Benjamin Mitchell of Morning Sun, IA and Deanna Westerman and husband David of Ponca City, OK as well as 15 grandchildren.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, brother Kimball Mitchell, and sister Pamela Delph.
