Merle Martin Young of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Friday evening, November 5, 2010, in the Shawn Manor Nursing Home in Ponca City, Oklahoma, at the age of 85 years.

Merle Martin Young was born on September 12, 1925, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, to Herbert Martin and Gladys Sylvia (Haiflich) Young. He grew up on a farm near Blackwell attending rural Kay County schools before attending Blackwell High School. While in high school he entered the United States Navy serving during World War II on the USS Liscome Bay which was struck by the Japanese and sunk. He was one of the few that survived the attack and received for his bravery and valor the coveted Purple Heart. Following his discharge he returned to Blackwell and married Maryjo Middlestetter on July 20, 1947, at a ceremony on the family farm. Following their marriage they settled on a farm near Peckham, Oklahoma, before moving in the early 1950’s to a farm south of Blackwell and continuing his farming operation. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Blackwell and enjoyed his family especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Maryjo Young of Blackwell, Oklahoma; a son, Merle M. Young Jr. and wife Janet of Houston, Texas; three daughters, Marilyn Taylor and husband Fred of Arkansas City, Kansas, Barbara Reynolds and husband Ronnie of Bismark, North Dakota, and Debbie Denton and husband Larry of Blackwell; a sister, Darla Mills and husband Miles of Ponca City, Oklahoma; a brother, Delmar Young and wife Rosemary of Portland, Tennessee; eight grandchildren; and sixteen great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Karen Linda Young; a sister, Berva Lewis; and a brother, Ivan Young.

Services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 9th in the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Blackwell with the Rev. Matt Smith of Immanuel Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery with military rites performed by the Blackwell American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Serving as casketbearers will be Colin Taylor, Jonathan Taylor, Brian Taylor, Rollin Denton, Larry Young and David Young.

Our precious sweet mother, Maryjo Young, went to meet the Lord in Heaven along with, the love of her life, her husband Merle, and her baby daughter, Karen Linda Young.

Maryjo Young, age 85, passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2015, with her children by her side, at the Renaissance Assistant Living Center in Ponca City, Oklahoma. She was born on September 14, 1930, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, to Jessie and Lela (Crabtree) Middlestetter. She attended grade school at Dayton, Ohio, until she moved back to Blackwell where she attended and graduated from Blackwell High School. She married Merle Martin Young Sr. on July 20, 1947, at his parents’ farm south of Blackwell. They resided and farmed at Peckham, Oklahoma from July, 1947 to September, 1952. In 1952 they moved to a farm south of Blackwell, where they farmed for sixty-four years. They were members of the First Baptist Church in Blackwell.

Maryjo was a wonderful mother and dedicated farmers wife. She enjoyed sewing, arts and crafts, loved cooking great meals and serving her family with so much love. Maryjo loved to be with people, was quick to strike up conversation and was noted for her cheerful, friendly, attitude and enduring smile.

Maryjo is survived by a son, Merle Martin Young Jr. and wife Janet of Houston, Texas; three daughters, Marilyn Taylor and husband Fred of Arkansas City, Kansas, Barbie Reynolds and husband Ron of Zimmerman, Minnesota, and Debbie Denton and husband Larry of Ponca City, Oklahoma; a brother, Charles Middlestetter and wife Mary of Pahrump, Nevada; eight grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Merle, a daughter, Karen Linda Young; and two sisters, May and Stella.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 8th, in the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Blackwell with Rev. John Waterloo of Central Baptist Church, Ponca City, officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Colin Taylor, Jonathan Taylor, Brian Taylor, Rollin Denton, David Young and Larry Young. Serving as honorary casketbearers will be Fred Taylor, Larry Denton and Ron Reynolds.
