September 23, 1920 - January 22, 2014

Eugene Virgil Smith, born on September 23, 1920, in Blackwell OK, left this earth on January 22, 2014 to meet his Lord and greet his beloved wife and son. On July 22, 1941, Gene married Evelyn Lucille McCulley, to this union, was born Gloria Jean Smith Carr, Karine Susan Smith Stout, and Larry Eugene Smith.

Gene graduated from Blackwell (OK) High School and attended college at Northern Oklahoma Junior College, S. W. Texas State Teacher"s College, Phillips University, Oklahoma City University, Oklahoma University, Central State University then received his M.S. degree from Oklahoma State University in 1970. Gene served his country as a Fighter Pilot with the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946. Following discharge, he became Band Director at Medford, OK then taught Band, Science and Geology in the Mid-Del School System (1948-1978). From 1967 -1970 he was an instructor with the National Science Foundation Summer Institutes at OU and OSU. He was employed by the State of Oklahoma Department of Education as a Science Specialist from 1980 until his retirement in 1984.

During his teaching career Gene was awarded the Outstanding Earth Science Teacher (1970) presented by National Assn. of Geology Teachers, Teacher of the Year (1969) Mid-Del Schools and numerous other awards. Following retirement, Gene and Evelyn enjoyed traveling and were active musicians with the Nichols Hills Band, the Flying High Band of Tinker Air Force Base, and the UCO Summer Band. Whether playing his trumpet, directing, or arranging the musical scores, Gene was happy to make music with his friends.

Preceding him in death were his son Larry, parents Alta and Roy Smith, and brother Myron Smith and wife Marie.

Survivors include daughters, Gloria Smith Carr and Karine Smith Stout and husband Terry Stout, 6 grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, January 25 at Barnes Friederich Funeral Home in Midwest City OK officiated by Bob Rutherford.
