Edith Merietta Purdy of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Sunday, February 17, 2019, at her home in Blackwell at the age of 89 years.

Edith Merietta Purdy was born on August 13, 1929, in Blackwell to Henry Edward and Helen Mae (Wallace) Barrows Sr. She grew up in Blackwell and attended Blackwell Public Schools. Following her education she worked as a waitress at various cafes in Blackwell. She married Max Allen Purdy on December 15, 1949, in Blackwell and they settled in Blackwell before moving to a farm northeast of town. While on the farm, she served her family as a homemaker as well as helping with the family sheep operation. In 1965 they returned to the Purdy home place west of Blackwell. Her husband preceded her in death on July 10, 2015, and she continued to make Blackwell her home. She was a member of the Oklahoma Grange, Blackwell Senior Citizens Center, American Hampshire Sheep Association, Kay County Sheep Producers, and the Oklahoma Sheep and Wool Producers.

She is survived by a daughter, Carol Sue Quinn of Owasso; two sons, Larry Max Purdy and wife Juanita of Blackwell and John Alan Purdy and wife Pam of Blackwell; two sisters, Vera McCurry and Velma Turner, both of Blackwell; twelve grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Kenneth Ray Purdy; a son-in-law, Jerry Quinn; two sisters, Waneta Ebert and Esther Herren; and two brothers, Harvey and Ed Barrows.

Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 22nd in the First United Methodist Church in Blackwell with Rev. Cap McIlnay officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be David Quinn, Bob Quinn, Neal Purdy, Lonnie Purdy and J. L. Purdy. Serving as honorary casketbearers will be Stacey Hess, Kerry Ross, Dawn Winkle, Karen Inman, Kim Knight, Jessica Smith and Cinda Whaylen.

A memorial has been established in her honor with the Blackwell Senior Citizens Center in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
