Shirley Ann Ward Martin of Oklahoma City died early Monday morning, August 13, 2012, in the Select Specialty Hospital in Oklahoma City at the age of 83 years. Shirley had a beautiful life. Although she is absent from the body, she is present with the Lord.
Shirley Ann Ward Martin was born on July 13, 1929, in Enid, Oklahoma, to Orville Frank and Beaulah Martin (Taylor) Reim. As a young girl she moved with her family to Blackwell in 1936 where she attended Union Rural School and graduated from Blackwell High School in 1947. She furthered her education by attending Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, for a year before transferring to the University of Oklahoma in Norman where she completed a bachelors degree in music education and held membership in the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. She married Paul Ward on March 1, 1951, in Blackwell and they settled in South Carolina where he was stationed in the United States Navy. Following his discharge they returned to Norman where she began teaching elementary music. After several relocations they moved to El Dorado, Kansas, where she returned to the home to care for her family. She was actively involved in her children’s activities including P.T.A., and serving as a leader in Cub Scouts. Her husband preceded her in death on August 4, 2003. She later married Phil Martin on June 1, 2006, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and they resided in Oklahoma City. She was a member of Church of the Servant and P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was a renowned bridge player and was a member of various bridge clubs. She also enjoyed painting, singing and creating decoupage and just having fun. Shirley loved her family dearly and enjoyed large family gatherings in which she always prepared a delicious feast.
She is survived by her husband, Phil Martin of Oklahoma City; a daughter, Susan Riseling and husband Larry of Dumas, Texas; two son, David Ward and wife Lesa of Blackwell and Robert Ward and wife Mollie of Austin, Texas; nine grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; and a daughter, Debbie Breen, and grandson, Morgan "Bunker" Breen.
Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 16th in the Church of the Servant in Oklahoma City with Rev. Tim Travers officiating. Burial will be that afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in the Blackwell Cemetery with Rev. Jeff Koch officiating.
Honorary casketbearers will be Wade Shaw, Omar Rosalis, Craig Riseling, and Reid Riseling
A memorial has been established in her honor with Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation or the Church of the Servant in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
