Glen R. Johnson, Sr.
January 8, 1926 - May 28, 2008
Glen Ruffus Johnson Sr. of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at his home east of Blackwell at the age of 82 years.
Glen Ruffus Johnson Sr. was born on January 8, 1926, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, to Willard A. and Daisy Mary (Duggan) Johnson. At the age of fifteen he began working at the flour mill in Blackwell. During World War II he entered the civil service at Mare Island Naval Base where he worked on underwater sound equipment on submarines and destroyers. He then transferred to Tinker Air Force Base in Midwest City, Oklahoma, where he worked on the Superfortress and B-29 airplanes. He married Joyce Fay Hurst on April 21, 1948, in Newkirk, Oklahoma, and they settled in Blackwell. Following the war he returned to Blackwell and worked in various farm type jobs. This gave him a chance to hunt mink for a living. He later owned and operated a auto repair business until his retirement. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Blackwell.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Johnson of Blackwell; a daughter, Pamilla Johnson Tripp of Prescott, Arizona; four sons, Glen R. Johnson Jr. of Blackwell, Mark A. Johnson of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Ken C. Johnson of Kaw City, Oklahoma, Douglas R. Johnson of Newkirk, Oklahoma; four brothers, Bill A. Johnson of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Delbert F. Johnson of Clebourne, Texas, Jerry K. Johnson of Ponca City, Oklahoma, and Carl C. Johnson of Ponca City, Oklahoma; three sisters, Zyla D. Cox of Big Water, Utah, Patti L. Harper of Kingwood, Texas, and Connie Burnham of Kremlin, Oklahoma; twelve grandchildren; and fifteen great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Phyllis; and a brother, Newell.
Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 31st, in the First Baptist Church in Blackwell with the Rev. Michael Moers officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.
Honorary Casketbearers will be Lester LaRue, Keith Jeffries, Bill Ekert, Dr. Robert Morgan, Bob Wildgrube, Melvin Kahle, Charles Boesch and Elmer Hasselbring. Serving as casketbearers will be Ryan Johnson, Virgil Johnson, Joe Johnson, Garrett Johnson, Zack Johnson and Curtis Johnson.
A memorial has been established with the Hospice of North Central Oklahoma in c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home.
