Irene Cole formerly of Blackwell, Oklahoma, died Thursday morning, March 24, 2016, at her son's home in Norman, Oklahoma, at the age of 98 years. Allie Irene Hackney Mitchell Cole was born on November 11, 1917 in Ellendale, Woodward County, Oklahoma to James Calvin and Osie Catherine Friend Hackney. As a child, Irene lived briefly in Quay, Oklahoma, Monte Vista, Colorado, Copeland, Arkansas, and Medicine Lodge, Kansas. She made Blackwell her home in 1935 when she graduated from high school.

She married Jessy Ray Mitchell on July 24, 1937 in Blackwell, Oklahoma and he preceded her in death on February 21, 1988.

She was employed for six years by the Blackwell Journal Tribune, and for 21 years with Bickford and Bellah, CPA’s, before she retired in 1982. Irene was a long-time member of the Church of Christ in Blackwell. She enjoyed art, painting and reading.

She married Herbert Cole on April 20, 1990 in Blackwell, Oklahoma and he preceded her in death on June 24, 2001.

She is survived by her two sons, Jim Mitchell and his wife Phoebe of Denver, Colorado, John Mitchell and his wife Peggy of Norman, Oklahoma; one stepson Stanley Cole and his wife Nancy of Muskogee, Oklahoma; one daughter in law, Donna Cole of De Sota, Texas; six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, as well as many other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Oral Hackney and wife Mildred, two sisters, Lula Gobel and Stella Childers, and one step son, George Cole.

Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30, at the Church of Christ in Blackwell with Lanny Jobe officiating. Burial will follow in the Blackwell Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Don Jeans, Gail Moore, Jim Kincaid, Landon Jobe, Bob Fletcher and David Kersey.

A memorial has been established in her honor with Blackwell Church of Christ or charity of your choice c/o Roberts and Son Funeral Home, 120 W. Padon, Blackwell, Oklahoma 74631.
