Mary Irene (McGee) Cummins

Mary Irene McGee Cummins was born August 25, 1915 to Ollie Mae (Robinson) and O.B. McGee in Harmon County, Oklahoma. She died in Hollis on Wednesday, December 24, 2014. She was a lifelong resident of Hollis. Irene attended school at La Casa and was a member of the Church of Christ. She married Loyd Xmas Cummins on October 3, 1931. Loyd and Irene had four children. Irene was a master gardener. She had a large and beautiful vegetable garden every year, had a large orchard and hundreds of flowers around her home. Numerous times her yard was chosen as the Yard of the Week or Month by different local organizations. Irene was a terrific cook. She canned the vegetables and fruit she raised and people loved her homemade fried pies. She was also a skilled seamstress, making clothes for her children and grandchildren. People would pay her to make clothes for their dolls. She quilted and crocheted and was proficient in numerous other crafts. Irene was a grand story teller. She enjoyed writing poetry, songs and short stories. She also loved music and enjoyed singing and playing the piano.

Irene was widowed when Loyd died in 1977. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her oldest son Garland Wayne, four brothers Blant, Blair, Kenneth and Travis, two sisters, Pauline Sexton and Louise Garton, a son-in-law Bob Wilcox and two daughters-in-law Jeannie and Judi.

She is survived by her son L. B. and wife Myrtle Ann of Hinton, daughter Mary Lou and husband Earl Nelson of Duncan, daughter Callie and husband Vance Jimeson of Granite, brother Glenneth and wife Claudine of Hollis, 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Irene Cummins will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 27, 2014, at Harmon County Funeral Home Chapel. Private interment will follow under the direction of Harmon County Funeral Home of Hollis.
