Leo Bruce Nelson was born September 14, 1923 in Alfalfa, OK to Embert M and Catherine Nelson. He passed away June 18, 2012 at Edmond, Oklahoma at the age of 88 years, 9 months and 4 days.
Bruce graduated from Hobart Schools and from Oklahoma A & M College. He was married to Opal Lee (Cooper) at Hobart, Oklahoma on July 21, 1945. He taught school in Beckham, Caddo and Cotton counties in Oklahoma. He was the Vocational Agriculture teacher in Indiahoma and Walters, Grade School Principal and Basketball coach in Stecker, Oklahoma before they moved back to western Oklahoma and he taught elementary education and coached at Elk City, Oklahoma. He later taught science at Carter before retiring after 22 years. Bruce later farmed and ranched in the Willow and Carter communities.
He was an active member of Sayre Church of Christ for over 40 years. Bruce was also active in 4-H, the Farm Bureau Association where he served on the board from 1978 until 1992 and was a state officer for the Retired Teachers Association. Bruce had received numerous awards in agriculture.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 65 years, 3 sisters, 2 brothers and 1 granddaughter, Kristin.
He is survived by his 2 sons, Mike Nelson and wife, Jerri, Fountain, CO, Marvin Nelson and wife, LaDonna, Fountain, CO; 4 Grandchildren, Cpl. Jonathan Nelson, USMC and wife, Kelsey, Wayne Nelson, USN ET2, and wife, Genevieve, Guy Nelson, Kattee Nelson, several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
