Pond Creek Cemetery

April 22, 1930 - September 02, 2018

Orville Dean Rex, age 88, of Pond Creek entered into Heaven at 12:15 p.m. on September 2, 2018.

A casual visitation will be Thursday Sept 6, 2018 from 6-7:30p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home, Pond Creek. A casual-wear-only celebration of life service for Rex (the name his friends knew to call him) is planned for Friday Sept 7, 2018 at 10:00a.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Pond Creek, Ok. Burial with military honors will follow at Pond Creek Cemetery.

Rex was welcomed into this world on April 22, 1930 near Marshall, Oklahoma by his parents, John William Rex and Ethel Mary Myrick Rex. Four years later, he became the big brother of Orlene Loraine (Rex) Hager, who survives him in Parker, Colorado.

Rex attended Enid High School and helped his father deliver Gold Spot milk products in the Pond Creek/Medford area. He also shocked and pitched wheat and oat bundles on his grandparents farm during summer in Orlando, Oklahoma.

Rex joined the National Guard in 1946, becoming a member of K Company, 179th Infantry of the 45th Division, based in Lawton.

In August 1950, his division was called by the Army to serve in the Korean War. Rex was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries in combat on January 29, 1952. After recovery he served 5 more months before being honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant 1st Class.

After discharged, Rex studied Diesel Mechanics at Oklahoma A&M Tech in Okmulgee on the G.I. Bill. He was employed as a diesel mechanic by Greyhound, International Harvester, and Enid Farm Store before moving to Pond Creek in 1960 to work for John Deere.

He opened his own diesel garage in Pond Creek in 1964, servicing local tractors, buses, cars and trucks in the community. In 1968, Rex took a welder position with George E. Failing Co.in Enid, where he worked until retirement in 1992.

Rex was a man of honesty, humility and conviction to the principle of always serving and doing right by others.

After 41 years of devoted marriage, Rex lost the love of his life, Colleen Beesley Rex in January 1992. Their surviving family includes 4 children: John David Rex and wife Bernie of Enid, Kevin Dean Rex of Pond Creek, Robin Ann (Rex) Steele and husband Paul of Katy, TX, and Lori Sue Rex of Pond Creek.

Also surviving are four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren: Alicia Schulein Cowherd, husband Steve, and children, Tegan, Haizlie and Koby of Enid; Thad Cardwell, wife Megan, and children Montreal and Viggo of Tulsa; Monica (Cardwell) Edwards, husband Jake, and children James, Emmy and Lila of Lake Charles, LA; Leigh Taylor Steele of College Station, TX; and Jamie Marie Rex of Enid.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Pond Cree Cemetery Association or Hospice Circle of Love.
