The funeral service for Betty L. Keown, 93, of Enid is 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at First Christian Church, Pond Creek, with Dr. Richard Dunn officiating. Burial will follow at Pond Creek Cemetery under the direction of Wilson Funeral Home.

Betty was born in Enid, Oklahoma, on September 30, 1923, to Louis B. Norris and Edith Wood Norris and died May 26, 2017, at Greenbrier Nursing Home, Enid, OK. She was blessed with perfect pitch and loved playing piano and singing. She started singing at funerals and weddings when she was 14. She graduated from Phillips University in 1945 with majors in vocal music and business. The war was still on in the Pacific in June of 1945 when she went to Washington, D.C., and got a job in the Navy's Bureau of Shipping in the Engineering Department. She came back to Enid in the spring of 1946 and then got a job teaching school in Protection, Kansas. She taught music to all 12 grades and shorthand to high-school students. She married Robert Keown in 1948 and spent time raising her family on farms in both Harper, Kansas, and Pond Creek, Oklahoma.

She later worked as a court clerk at the Garfield County Courthouse. When issuing marriage licenses, she often said hers were special because her marriage licenses were for marriages that last. She was an active and longtime member of Central Christian Church in Enid and later joined The First Christian Church of Pond Creek. She was a perfectionist with her sewing; she enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles and beating her children and grandchildren at card games.

Betty is survived by three daughters, Barbara (Jim) Cole of Yuma, AZ, Christine (Jim) Roberts of Pond Creek, Katie (Dennis) DeRossett of Springfield, IL, and two sons, Lee Keown of Pond Creek and Neil Keown of Enid; six grandchildren, Chris Morse of Long Beach, CA, Erin Roberts-Svob and Taddum Riddle both of Pond Creek, Rusty Eck of Enid, Roger Keown of Oklahoma City and Keri Clemmer of Springfield, IL; and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Bob, sister Virginia and daughter Anne.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice Circle of Love, First Christian Church of Pond Creek or the Pond Creek Cemetery Association.
