© The Verden News Verden, Oklahoma October 8, 1943 February 1, 1860 ~ October 5, 1943 SERVICES HELD FOR MRS SLACK THURSDAY Funeral services were conducted for Mrs Martha Jane Slack at 3:00 p. m. Thursday at the Baptist church by Rev. W. O. Cooley, pastor, assisted by Rev E. L. Spann, pastor of the Methodist church. Interment was in the Verden Cemetery with the Hansen Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The music was rendered by a quartet composed of Mrs J. N. Kern, Mrs R. M. Caldwell, F. G. Ransbarger and B. M. Ransbarger, singing "Old Rugged Cross" and "Life's Railway to Heaven" and a solo "Beautiful Isle" by Mrs R. W. Peters with Mrs F. G. Ransbarger playing piano accompaniments. Pallbearers were G. G. McVey, J. N. Kern, E. W. Peters, C. A. Niday, L. H. Periman and Parker Woodall.Martha Jane Goodwin was born in Missouri, February 1880, passed away in Chickasha, Oklahoma, October 5th, 1943 at the age of 83 years, 8 months, and 4 days. She came to Texas in 1874 and in 1875 was united in marriage to W. H. Slack at Ft. Worth, Texas. They made their home at Weatherford, Texas and to this union were born six children. She became a member of the Baptist church when she was 21 years of age at Greenwood, Texas. Her husband passed away in 1892. She married M. N. Peargin in 1893 who died in 1906. She came to Verden in 1910 and made her home with Mrs Smith and has lived here the remainder of her life. Those left to mourn her departure are her six children, three daughters, Mrs Bertha Roylance, of Clarksville, Ark., Mrs Ida M. Smith of Verden, Okla., and Mrs Margarett Conrath of El Paso, Texas, three sons, H. H. Slack of New Mexico, H. O. Slack of Edinburg, Texas and V. F. Slack of Los Angeles, Calif. Two sisters, Mrs P. A. Roylance of Ames, Okla. and Mrs Mary Marney of Ponca City, Okla. One brother, Mr. W. A. Goodwin of Dublin, Texas, 22 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren, also a host of other relatives and friends. |
