© The Verden News Verden, Oklahoma Friday, January 26, 1934 February 18, 1848 ~ January 24, 1934 Grandmother Simmons who has been in declining health for several years passed away at her home here Wednesday, January 24, 1934. She was 85 years old, 11 months and 6 days. Was born at Springsville, Ala., February 18. 1848. The funeral services will be held this afternoon at 3:00 o'clock at the Methodist church with the Rev. Peak, pastor officiating and interment made in the Verden cemetery. She was united in marriage to M. P. Simmons, May 20, 1871, to this union were born 4 children, 2 having preceded her in death, and W. L. Simmons of Marland, Oklahoma and Margret Wasson of Norge. At a very early age she united with the Methodist church; throughout her lifetime remained a true and ardent Christian. She was a faithful devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Not only was her entire life given to the dutiful care of a mother, but reared as her own children, 2 grandchildren whom she lived to see grown into manhood. It may well be said that her life was useful, dedicated to her family and to her God. She had lived in this vicinity for approximately 30 years. She is known by almost every man, woman and child as a kind, tender grandmother. In addition to her husband, son, daughter and brother, Weldon Brooks, who survive her, she leaves to mourn her loss: 12 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren. Throughout her long and active life, she has been an inspiration for the good and noble things in life. Her passing leaves a place indeed hard to fill. There are many who will miss her kind and tender words of encouragement in life's dark hours. She has reaped her just reward in heaven without fear of death or eternity. |
© The Verden News Verden, Oklahoma June 17, 1938 February 7, 1851 ~ June 8, 1938 Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Methodist church for M. P. Simmons, age 87, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs Clint Wasson, near Norge. Melmath P. Simmons was born in Alabama, February 7, 1851, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs Margaret Wasson at Norge, Oklahoma, June 8, 1938 at the age of 87 years, 4 months and 1 day. He grew to young manhood in Alabama, married in 1871 to Elizabeth Brooks and to this union was born 4 children, 3 girls and one boy, Billy Simmons of Okmulgee, now. Mrs Margaret Wasson of Norge, Lenora Murrah and Mary Simmons preceded him in death quite a few years ago. Mr. Simmons moved to West Texas after leaving Alabama and later to Oklahoma before statehood. His wife passed away in Verden, January 24, 1934. He leaves to mourn his departure one son, Billy of Okmulgee, one daughter, Margaret of Norge, 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Rev. Haley of Chickasha officiated and a double duet, composed of Mrs J. N. Kern, Miss Maria Protzman, Mrs C. W. Hamill and Mrs Harry Dodson, with Mrs I. H. Bilbrey at the piano, sang "The Old Rugged Cross," "Sweet By and By" and "Beautiful Isle." Interment was made in the Verden cemetery with the Hansen Funeral Home in charge. Out of town people who attended the funeral were: Mr and Mrs Roy Wasson and children, Mr and Mrs George Murrah and Judge Murrah of Oklahoma City. |
Verden, Oklahoma October 1929 1859 ~ October 4, 1929 He was killed when he fell from a farm wagon west of Verden. He was helping a farmer move some furniture when a passing truck frightened his team of horses. He fell from the wagon and broke his neck. An inquest was conducted and the truck driver was not to blame for the accident. Mr. Simmons is buried in an unmarked grave. |
© The Verden News Verden, Oklahoma 5 April 1935 September 17, 1872 ~ March 28, 1935 Mrs Eulala Dayton-Simmons was born in Alabama September 17th, 1872, passed away at her home northwest of Verden, March 28th, 1935, at the age of 62 years, 6 months, and 11 days. Mrs Simmons when a small girl moved with her family to Texas and lived there until grown. At the age of 22 years she was united in marriage to M. C. Simmons and to this union was born three children, one passed away in infancy, Floyd and Carl are left to mourn. Mr and Mrs Simmons moved from Texas to Oklahoma in 1906 and have resided in this community since that time. She was converted at an early age and united with the Missionary Baptist church of which she has been a member ever since. She was a member of the First Baptist church of Verden at the time of her death. Services were held at the Baptist church in Verden Friday morning with Rev. C. W. Taylor in charge. Interment was made in Verden cemetery. Hansen Funeral Home in charge of the burial arrangements. |
© The Verden News Verden, Oklahoma May 6, 1949 November 8, 1895 ~ May 4, 1949 Funeral services for Bill Simmons were conducted at 2:30 p. m. Friday, May 6 at the local Baptist Church with Rev. Garland Anderson, pastor, officiating, assisted by Rev C. W. Taylor. Mrs Don Brown had charge of the music. Interment was in the Verden cemetery under the direction of the Hansen Funeral Home. William Powell Simmons was born November 8, 1895 in Stevens county, Texas and died at 8 p. m. May 4 in Oklahoma City at the age of 53 years five months and 26 days. He came to Verden in 1907, went through school here and was manager of the Washita Valley Gin at one time. He left here about 12 years ago. Survivors include three half brothers, Judge A. P. Murrah and George and Elmo Murrah, all of Oklahoma City. |
© The Chickasha Star Chickasha, Oklahoma June 2, 1966 September 18, 1905 ~ March 27, 1966 SIMMONS SERVICES HELD Funeral services for Mrs Ines Rebeccah Simmons were held Monday at 2:30 p.m. in the First Baptist Church with the Rev Kenneth Barrett, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev Edward Whitley, pastor for the Pentecostal Church of God. Mrs W. A. Finley, Mrs Dale Henricks, Mrs Chester Heavin and Mrs Harry Dodson, accompanied by Mrs Donald Brown at the piano, sang "In The Garden," "Precious Memories" and "How Great Thou Art." Casket bearers wer V. E. "Chuck" Griffith, Dank Pitts, Orin "Doc" Heavin, Ben Groves, Don Wright and Bob Holman. Interment was in the Verden Cemetery under the direction of the Hansen Funeral Home. Mrs Simmons was born September 18, 1905 in Morgan County, Mo., and passed away May 27, 1966, at Presbyterian Hospital, Oklahoma City. She was married to Carl M. Simmons December 17, 1940. One child preceded her in death. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Rebekah Lodge. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Billy K. Simmons of the home and James Robert (Bobby) Simmons of the United States Navy, stationed in Hawaii; two brothers, Beryl Phillips of Artesia, N. M., and Bill Phillips of Tempe, Ariz., and one sister, Mrs Maude Peck of Edmond. |

© Eisenhour Funeral Home Blanchard, Oklahoma October 2023 December 30, 1944 - October 4, 2023 Billy Keith "Tiny" Simmons, 78 of Blanchard, passed away on October 4, 2023, in Norman. The son of Carl Mack and Ines Rebecca [Phillips] Simmons, Tiny was born on December 30, 1944, in Chickasha, Oklahoma. Tiny grew up in Verden and moved to Blanchard in 1969 when he married JoAnn Knox on January 29, 1969. Tiny was a professional truck driver, having driven well over a million miles, accident-free. He worked for McComas Truck Lines and then moved to Overnight Trucking. After leaving Overnight, he then transferred to Triangle Express. After retirement, he continued to drive hot shot trips of pneumatic trucks (frac sand and water) in the oil industry. He was a member of The Association of Motor Carriers of Oklahoma, where he participated in truck rodeos for many years, winning several championship titles. Tiny and JoAnn were long-time members of The First United Methodist Church of Blanchard, where he took pride in taking the offering and being a part of the men’s group. In his spare time, Tiny enjoyed gardening, chopping wood, tractor work, and basically anything outside. He also liked to do leather work, but he was notorious for piddling around. He loved spending time with his family and working on projects. Tiny was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Johnny Mack Simmons and James Robert “Bobby” Simmons. Tiny is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, JoAnn Simmons of Blanchard; three daughters, Brandi Butler [#1] and husband Brian of Elk City, Rebecca McMurtrey [#2] and husband John of Blanchard, and Staci Jervis [#3] and husband Brian of Sapulpa; one son, Keith Knox Simmons [#4] and wife Mandy of Blanchard; grandchildren Madison Jo and Hoyt Simmons McMurtrey, Billie Ann and Josie Jervis, Paisley and Presley “PK” Simmons and Elizabeth, Tristen and Brianna “Ree” Butler; numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at The Methodist Church of Blanchard. Burial will follow in the Verden Cemetery. © The Verden News Verden, Oklahoma October 11, 1929 June 1, 1946 ~ June 23, 1973 SIMMONS IS DEAD RESULT OF FALL Fatally Injured When He Falls From Wagon; Funeral Held Sunday J. B. Simmons, age 70, of near Verden was fatally injured when he fell from a wagon, on which he was hauling furniture, when his team became frightened by a truck on the highway four miles west of Verden. Funeral services for Mr Simmons, who is survived by his wife and a daughter, were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Church at 3:30 o'clock with Rev Perry conducting the services. Interment was made in the Verden cemetery. Mr Simmons was helping a family move to a farm west of Verden when the accident occurred. It was stated that Mr Simmons was seated on a kitchen cabinet in the wagon when the truck drove by and the team became frightened. Mr Simmons stood up in the wagon to bring the team under control when the cabinet toppled out of the wagon and he fell. His head struck the rear fender of the truck and his neck was broke. An inquest in the accident was conducted by Caddo county officials and B. G. Holding, Grady county attorney, was notified Saturday morning by the Anadarko justice of the peace that no blame for the accident was placed against the truck driver by the corner's jury. |
