Anadarko, Oklahoma
Febvruary 1980

Viola May [Poe] Conn Boren Harper Osborne
January 10, 1883 ~ February 5, 1980

Viola May Poe was born near Marietta, Indian Territory, Oklahoma, on January 10, 1883, the daughter of Mary Melvina Prewitt [1866-1941] and William James Poe.

Mary's parents were Solomon Richard Prewitt [1828-1897] and Rebecca Martha Garrett [1835-1898]. William's parents are unknown. Their marriage took place either in Texas or Indian Territory, Oklahoma, between 1880 and 1882.

Due to the scarcity of records [during this period 1880-1900] for Oklahoma, Texas, and Arkansas it is unknown what happened to William. However, around 1887, Mary marries Pinkney Alonzo Conn [according to the 1900 federal census]. By 1900, when the next US Federal Census became available, May, as she was known, had already married, Isaac Daniel "ID" Conn [1869-1937], in Carter, Indian Territory, Oklahoma. Isaac was the son of William Hezekiah Conn [1840-1917] and Martha Ann Rebecca Lippard [1847-1889], and nephew of Pinkney Alonzo Conn. Isaac was a farmer and a Baptist minister. The Reverend Isaac died on 14 August 1937 and is buried in the South Fairview Cemetery in Wellington, Collingsworth County, Texas.

May and Isaac had two known children: Daniel Conn, born 5 April 1902, and John Conn, born 6 February 1905, both born in Indian Territory, Oklahoma. The circumstances surrounding the breakup of their marriage are unknown but records show they were divorced and the boys were raised by Isaac's sister, Doshia Ann Conn Stafford. Her husband was Bloxham Barney Stafford [1871-1937].

The 1910 US Federal Census [Lagansville, Curry County, New Mexico] shows both, Daniel and John, living with Doshia and Bloxham. On a picture found of the two boys, their birthdays and a note saying John was killed in a tornado when he was 9 years old is written on the back. That would place his death in 1914. Being that Doshia and Bloxham had children during 1912, 1915 and 1916, all born in Texas, that would place the deadly tornado that took the life of John in that state. His place of burial is unknown.

In 1920, Daniel is still living with Doshia and Bloxham and listed as an adopted son. The last record found for Daniel was in 1930 where he was working in the oil fields of Oklahoma.

May next marries, Oscar "Ossie" Theopholus Boren [1889-?] at Altus, Jackson County, Oklahoma, on 22 December 1909. Oscar was the son of William Theophelus Boren [1847-1925] and Francis A Barnett [1849-1900], born 29 June 1889, in Plumerville, Conway County, Arkansas. Ossie's brother, Henry Cleveland Boren [1879-1957] was the husband of Dora Lee Conn [1889-1927], who was May's halfsister. Her parents were Mary Melvina Prewitt and Pinkney Alonzo Conn.

The last record found for May and Ossie was the 1910 Federal Census, in Navajo, Jackson County, Oklahoma. The census states they had been married four months and didn't have any children. Once again, due to the lack of records, what happened to Ossie and where he is buried is unknown.

May's third marriage was to Joshua Seward Harper [1876-1944], at Howard County, Arkansas, on 10 May 1924. The 1930 Federal Census places them in Broken Bow, McCurtain County, Oklahoma, and in 1940 in Rural, McCurtain County, Oklahoma. Joshua died on 14 January 1944 in McCurtain County and is buried in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Records next pick up May when she marries, William Lee Osborne [1879-1959] on 1 March 1951 in Nashville, Howard County, Arkansas. William was a military veteran who served in the Spanish American War in Co. E. 2nd Regt Arkansas Inf. He died on 6 January 1959 and is buried in the Osborne Memorial Cemetery in Joplin, Newton County, Missouri.

According to her obituary [Cyril Weekly News, Thursday, February 14, 1980] the couple lived in Broken Bow a number of years and May came to the Cyril and Cement communities in the 1960's after William died.

This is where she would spend the rest of her life. She died on 5 February 1980, at the Anadarko Municipal Hospital, following an extended illness and was buried in the Verden Cemetery, in Verden, Grady County, Oklahoma. This is also where her mother and several other extend family members are buried.

Mary Ann [Franklin] Osborne
July 15, 1904 ~ December 2, 1924

Death, as night, comes when it will,
Fades the light and all is still.

Mary Ann Franklin was born July 15, 1904, in Grady Co., Tuttle, Okla. She was converted and joined the Presbyterian church at the age of eleven years of which she was a member at her death.

She was married to Randolph Osborne November 15, 1920. To this union was born one child.

Mary Ann departed this life December 2, being 19 years, 4 months and 17 days old. She leaves a husband, daughter, father, mother, three sisters, three brothers, and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her departure. Her sister, Mr. E. L. Platz of Shoshone, Idaho, was unable to attend the funeral.

The services were conducted at the Methodist church Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock. The burial was made at the Verden cemetery, sorrounded by relatives and friends and was a fitting end to her "Perfect Day." The many beautiful floral offerings fulfilled the purpose for which they were sent.

Among us she ranked as a woman of culture, refinement and sympathy. She was a loving daughter, a faithful wife, a devoted mother and a true friend. By her departure we have all lost - but baby Yvonne has lost that which can never by regained, "the fairest of jewels, her mother."

Strange we never miss the music until the sweet voiced bird has flown, strange we never prize the violet until its lovely flower is gone. Strange that summer sun and sunshine never seem one half so fair as when winter's snowy pinion scatters white down on the air.

And now may "He who tempers the wind for the shorn land watch, comfort and guide them till they too, shall pass from the known to the unknown and join her in that 'house not made with hands' where sorrow and death shall not enter, but forever and ever shall be a home of happiness and pleasure untold and life everlasting."

A Friend
