John C. McVey
November 16, 1857 ~ December 7, 1941


John C. McVey was born November 16, 1857 in Knox County, Kentucky and passed away December 7, 1941 at the home of his son, John B. McVey near Anadarko, Oklahoma at the age of 84 years and 21 days.

Brother McVey was united in marriage to Amelia Jane Vaughn in 1880 at Jellico, Tennessee. To this union was born six sons: Dr. George M.; Everet C.; Grover C.; Albert S.; Richard C.; and John B. and Everet C. preceded him in death in 1912 and his wife preceded him in death in 1930.

Brother McVey moved to Oklahoma with his family in the year 1907 and located in Verden, at which place he has made his home since.

He joined the Masonic Lodge in Williamsburg, Ky. and was an honorary member of the Verden Lodge at the time of his death.

Brother McVey was a member of the First Baptist church of Verden. He has been a member of the Missionary Baptist church for more than fifty years.

He leaves to mourn his departure five sons, ten grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

Minnie Bell [Jones] McVey
April 17, 1881 ~ October 1, 1953


MRS. G. M. McVEY SERVICES HELD AT BAPTIST CHURCH

Funeral service for Mrs. G. M. McVey, pioneer resident, were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 3, at the First Baptist Church, Verden, with Rev. C. W. Taylor officiating, assisted by the pastor, Rev. Kenneth Elkins. Burial was in the Verden Cemetery under the direction of the Hansen Funeral Home.

Mrs. Donald Brown, Miss Sue Ann Finlay, Mrs. Harry Dodson, and Mrs. C. W. Hamill sang "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye." Jack McLane, Jr., sang "Mother Machree." Mrs. I K. Bilbry was pianist.

Nephews were casket bearers: Arthur McVey, Bill McVey, George McVey, and Isaac Bradford, Verden; Bert N. McVey of Anadarko and Hugh McVey, Chickasha.

Minnie Bell Jones was born in Williamsburg, Kentucky, April 17, 1881, and passed away in Verden, Okla., October 1, 1953 at the age of 72 years 5 months and 14 days.

She was united in marriage to Dr. G. M. McVey in Williamsburg, Kentucky and to this union was born two children. They moved to Verden, Okla. in 1906 and have made their home here since that time. She was a member of the Baptist Church, Eastern Star, Rebekah Lodge, and American Legion Auxiliary.

Those left to mourn her departure are her husband, Dr. G. M. McVey; one daughter, Mrs. Mabel Woodall, Verden; one son, John A. McVey, Chickasha; 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Four sisters, Mrs. Hattie Allen, Emlin, Kentucky; Mrs. Mollie White, Anaheim, Calif.; Mrs. Pearl Bradford, Williamsburg, Kentucky; and Mrs. Geneva Hahn of San Francisco, Calif. Grover Cleveland "Cleve" McVey

McVEY SERVICES HELD TUESDAY

Funeral services for Grover Cleveland McVey, 76, were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 in the First Baptist Church ast Verden. Rev. Jim Robertson of Sulphur and Rev. Martin Northcutt, pastor of the Verden Methodist Church, officiated.

A quartet composed of Miss Linda West, Mrs. W. A. Finley, Mrs. Harry Dodson and Mrs. Max Upchurch, sang "Rock of Ages," "Beautiful Isle" and "Safe in The Arms of Jesus." They were accompanied by Mrs. Donald Brown.

Pallbearers were Harry Dodson, Kenneth West, C. B. Dabney, Chick Griffith, Donald Brown and Dank Pitts. Interment was in the Verden Cemetery under the direction of Hansen's Funeral Home.

Mr. McVey was born in Knox County, Ky., on June 4, 1885, and died February 5 in the Anadarko Hospital. He came to Oklahoma from Kentucky in 1907 and was a school teacher and farmer. He was married to Miss Helel Garwood Rose October 26, 1909, in Verden. He was a member of the Methodist Church, IOOF Lodge and a stockholder in The National Bank of Verden.

Survivors are his wife; a son, George of Verden; two daughters, Mrs. Virginia Gooden of Apache and Mrs. Marjorie Pace, Anadarko, Rt. 2; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren; and four brothers, Dr. G. M. McVey and Sid McVey of Verden, R. C. McVey of Chickasha and J. B. McVey of Anadarko.

Helen Rose [Lay] McVey
January 1, 1887 ~ November 12, 1972


Helen Garwood Rose was born January 1, 1887, and deceased November 12, 1972, in McAlester, OK. She was an Indian orphan child who was the lone survivor of a group of Kiowa massacred at Devil's Canyon near Hinton, OK.

Her adopted mother, Hattie Rose, was widowed from the death of husband, Lieutenant George Rose, who fought with General Custer in Battle of Washita on November 27, 1868. Hattie later married Otis Lay.

Helen married Grover Cleveland McVey, October, 26, 1909, in Verden, OK.

Helen was preceded in death by; mother, Hattie Rose Lay; father, Lt. George Rose; brother, Walter Lay; sister, Ruth Simmons; husband, Grover Cleveland McVey; son, George Cleve McVey. She is survived by daughters Mrs. Virginia Gooden of Apache and Mrs. Marjorie Pace, Anadarko; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

George Cleve McVey
August 27, 1910 ~ October 24, 1966


Funeral services for George Cleve McVey were held Friday, October 28, 1966, in the First Methodist Church in Verden with the Reverend and Mrs. A.B. Hickman officiating. Mrs. Harry Dodson, Mrs. W.A. Finley, Mrs. Dale Henricks and Mrs. Max Upchurch accompanied by Mrs. Donald Brown at the piano, sang "Rock of Ages", "Beautiful Isle", and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus". Casketbearers were cousins of the deceased who were John McVey, Arthur McVey, Will McVey, Bert McVey, Billy R. McVey, and Parker Woodall. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Clement, Ray Hollar, Kenneth West, Bill Woods, Dank Pitts, C.B. Dabney, Donald Graham and Boy Scouts. Interment was in the Verden cemetery under the direction of Hansen Funeral Home.

McVey was born August 27, 1910, on the farm of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cleve McVey, west of Verden and resided there his entire life. He died October 24, 1966, at Willow Grove, PA, where he had been attending a Scout Master's School. He had been a Scout Master for the past 22 years. He was a member of the Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge and the Lion's Club.

He was preceded in death by his father Cleve McVey. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Helen McVey of Verden; two sisters, Mrs. Virginia Gooden of Apache and Mrs. Marjorie Pace of Verden; two nephews and one niece all of Verden.

Inez J. [Nichols] McVey

VERDEN ~ Services for Inez McVey, 73, of Chickasha will be at 3:30 p.m

Friday in the Verden United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ben Williams, pastor, officiating, and Ray Caltin assisting.

McVey was born September 9, 1913 in Stratford and died Tuesday in Benbrook, Texas.

After her marriage se came to the Verden area and lived north of Verden until 1983, when she moved to Chickasha. She was a member of the Chickasaw Nation and the Verden United Methodist Church.

She married John A. McVey October 7, 1937 in Idabel. He died January 18, 1985.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, Louis Carroll Nichols and Hannah Strickland Nichols; three brothers, Denver, Charlie and L. C. Nichols; one sister, Bessie Skaggs, and one grandson, John David McVey, Jr.

Survivors include three sons, George of Verden, John D. of Chickasha and Stephen of Moore; two daughters, Mary M. Warburton of Benbrook and Janie M. Thomas of Lewisville, Texas; two brothers, Ernest Nichols of Ada and Wayne Nichols of Stratgord; three sisters, Ora Britt of Riverbank, Calif., and Anna Owens and Mildred Hall, both of Stratford; 13 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.

Burial will be in the Verden Cemetery under direction of the Hansen-Binyon Chapel of the Brown-Binyon Funeral Home.

The family requests memorial contributions be sent to the American Cancer Society.
